Kickstart 2 Course

DSI & FAI have organised the Kickstart 2 course, for men & women on Saturday the 15th and Sunday the 16th of June at Deaf Village Ireland, in Dublin.

The course has already been postponed twice (February & March) due to being short of participants but we now have reached the minimum of 18 participants for June. However, there are 6 places available.

This course is designed to help coaches in the development of player’s (aged 6-12 years) soccer skills. This is a great opportunity for anyone to increase their confidence in teaching simple football for all ages.

Kickstart 2 is the second section of a two part coaching programme. To be eligible, participants must have completed the Kickstart 1 or FAI introductory course and be over the age of 16.

The cost of the course is €55 for DSI members or €75 for non-members. Places are limited, so to book a place contact Paul Ryder or 087 1349877 or at admin@deafsportsireland.com

An ISL interpreter will be provided.

SIGNtific Half Term 27th May:

1.30pm Storytelling for ages 7 and under – a storytelling adventure that takes you into Space to find out all about Stars!

A Star is Born: Join us on a journey of a lifetime, the lifetime of a star. From stellar nurseries to glittering galaxies!

3.30pm Show for ages 5 and over – a show about bubbles of all sizes going all over the place… with a little help from you!

Bubbles, Bubbles, Bubbles!: This interactive show features bubbles of all sizes going up, down, this way, that way, and all over the place… with a little help from the audience! Find out the secret Science Museum bubble recipe and you might even get the chance to step inside our famous human bubble.

SIGNtific Saturday 1st June:

1.30pm Storytelling for ages 7 and under – a storytelling adventure through the clouds about flying machines

Up, Up and Away!: Join us on this high flying adventure through the clouds in this fun interactive storytelling

3.30pm Workshop for ages 5 and over – a hands-on workshop where you can make your own moving robot that draws!

SM:Art Mechanics: Come along and build your own SM:Art Machine. These little bots will scribble and wriggle across your paper to create a doodling masterpiece.

20:45 The Science of Sex (BSL interpreted) – Biology explains so much of what we do and why we do it. Come along and hear why we fancy someone? Why do we cheat? Does love exist?

All our Deaf-led events are voiceover interpreted and suitable for deaf and hearing families.

NATIONAL STANDARDS FOR RESIDENTIAL SERVICES IN SIGN LANGUAGE.

The National Standards for Residential Services for Children and Adults with Disabilities will apply to residential and residential respite services across disability sectors in Ireland, whether they are run by public, private or voluntary bodies or organisations. They give service providers a framework to develop person-centred care for all people with disabilities and promote services that facilitate a good quality of life. They were developed following extensive consultation with people from all across the disability sector.

Information on the standards is now available in sign language. For more

UPDATE ON HSE NATIONAL POLICY.
We’ve been informed by SLIS that Caoimhe Gleeson from the HSE has put
together the final draft version of a national access policy for Deaf people
to HSE services. Thereafter, it should go through a ratification process
within the HSE.

Fingers crossed, we will see a national policy implemented in Ireland before
long. If and when we have further information, we will let you know.

TRAINING FOR INTERPRETERS ON REFUGEES AND ASYLUM SEEKERS.
The Dublin Rape Crisis Centre is running a two-day training programme for
community interpreters with funding from the European Refugee Fund. The
project is funded in order to support refugees and asylum seekers. The
training is available to those providing interpreting in relevant languages
including Irish Sign Language/English Interpreters.

However, if you wish to attend, the trainers would like to speak to you in
advance to discuss the issues specific to Irish Sign Language/English
Interpreters.” The course is free of charge. All enquiries can be made
directly to the Education Office at the Rape Crisis Centre by email

REMINDER OF IRELAND/ETHIOPIA DEAF PROJECT CYCLE.
The Ambo Ramble Cycle will take place on the 30th June. The closing date for
online entries is on Friday, June 10th at 5pm. To register, go

The main event is a 120Km cycle for experienced cyclists over 18yrs of age.
There is also a short 40km course for the less experienced cyclists who
would like to take part and support the cause.

SIGN LANGUAGE AT EUROVISION.
The winner of the 2012 Eurovision, Loreen performed her winning song
Euphoria in sign language with children from Adolf Fredrik Children’s Choir
and Manilla School at this years Eurovision in Malmo, Sweden. In total,
there were 68 children signing alongside Loreen, which was seen by a
staggering 125 million people throughout the world.

The Eurovision is now the largest singing contest in the world and we
commend Loreen and the Eurovision for highlighting sign language to such a
global audience. Loreen also highlighted sign language at the
Melodifestivalen earlier this year.

1st DEAF PERSON TO SAIL AROUND THE WORLD SOLO.
Gerry Hughes from the UK has become the first Deaf person to sail around the
world single-handedly and one of only 300 sailors to complete the feat.

Hundreds of admirers lined Troon Marina in South Ayrshire to watch him
return more than eight months and 51,500km (32,000 miles) since he set off
in his boat Quest III. ‘It has been a lifelong ambition to sail around the
world so it is difficult at the moment to comprehend what I have finally
achieved,’ Mr Hughes said. ‘The last eight months have been amongst the
toughest of my life but despite all the challenges of the expedition, it has
been a period I have thoroughly enjoyed. Sailing has always been my first
love and it provided a real escape from my deafness when I was a youngster.’

Mr Hughes was introduced to sailing by his father as a two-year-old and
wanted to sail around the since he was 14. The married father-of-two set off
on his fraught voyage around the five capes on September 1. On one leg his
boat even capsized as a result of massive waves. He has also suffered
continued problems with his onboard electronic equipment. He was able to
communicate with 3,000 supporters on his Facebook page.
