Kerry Deaf Resource Centre Updates 28/05/2012

FIRST SUBTITLED FILM IN TRALEE
This Wednesday 30th May Tralee Omniplex Cinema will show “Men In Black 3” (3D) with subtitles.

This is the first time that an English language film is being been shown in Kerry in an accessible format. Subtitling makes cinema accessible for Deaf and hard of hearing people, but it is also very useful for people learning English as a foreign language.

Therefore, there is a very wide appeal for subtitled showings.

KDRC and the Deaf community in Kerry have been campaigning for several years
for subtitles at local cinemas, and we hope that this is just the start. We
would like to thank Monica at Tralee Omniplex for her support. KDRC will
notify members on future subtitled cinema through its facebook page, watch

SUBTITLING QUESTIONNAIRE
Marion Hersh, Senior lecturer at University of Glasgow, has contacted KDRC
in relation to a questionnaire on subtitling for television and cinema. The
questionnaire is being carried out with Goldsmiths College and Deafax.
The aim of the research is to find out:
·       What deaf people think about existing subtitles?
·       What additional features deaf people want from subtitles?
·       What deaf people think of our proposals for improving subtitles?

The questionnaire can be downloaded at the following web address:
http://web.eng.gla.ac.uk/assistive/pages/assistive-technology/subtitles.php.
It is also possible to receive a hard copy of the questionnaire by
contacting Marion directly at [email protected].
