Kerry Deaf Resource Centre Update 30.09.13

VERONICA WHITE AND NCDP.
On Sunday afternoon, a huge crowd turned up in St. John’s Pastoral Centre in
Tralee to say a big thank you to Veronica White before she finishes up in
her role with the National Chaplaincy for Deaf People this week. We were
delighted to welcome visitors from Limerick, Cork and Dublin. Frankie Berry
and Fr. Gerard Tyrell from the NCDP in Dublin also made the journey to
Kerry.

Veronica has worked with the NCDP full time for the past 9 years and
freelanced before that for a number of years. As of the 1st of October, she
will return to freelance work and will be sadly missed by all those who had
the pleasure of working with her. Our sincere thanks to Veronica and to the
NCDP team for their hard work and commitment to the Deaf community in Co.
Kerry & Co. Cork. We wish her the very best for the future. If you would
like to book Veronica for freelance sign language interpreting work, she can
be booked via our service.

FAREWELL TO CE WORKERS.
We will also be saying a fond farewell to 3 Community Employment staff at
the start of November. Patrick Doody has been with us for the past 4 years
and has been an incredible worker. We would like to thank him for his hard
work and commitment to our service & clients. All our staff and clients will
sorely miss Patrick. Our thanks to An Riocht Castleisland for sponsoring his
position and in particular to An Riocht’s supervisor Denny Mc Sweeney.

We will also be saying a fond farewell to Johnny Prendergast and Rebecca
O’Donoghue who have been with us for the past year. We would like to thank
them for their hard work and commitment. We would also like to thank their
CE supervisor Sheila Cronin and NEKD for sponsoring their position.

UPCOMING CLASSES WITH THE DEAF ADULT LITERACY SERVICE (DALS).
With the new academic year starting again, so are our DALS classes.
Unfortunately due to funding cuts, DALS had to reduce the number of subjects
in
Co. Kerry to 2 subjects.
The first course will be Computers and the tutor for this course will be
Christina O’Donoghue. Her classes will run on Tuesdays from 11-1pm and will
commence on the 8th of October. Christina has been a DALS tutor for the past
few years and her classes are always very popular.

The 2nd course starting will be Personal Development/English. The tutor for
this course will be Mary Duggan. Her class will run on Wednesday from 3-5pm
starting the 9th of October. We would like to welcome back Mary as a DALS
tutor and look forward to working with her again.

If you would like to register for these classes, you can contact Susan
Whelan by email [email protected] or send us your details and we
will forward them to DALS.

IRISH SIGN LANGUAGE CLASSES.
John Patrick Doherty is a recent graduate of the Centre for Deaf Studies in
Trinity College. He will be starting beginner sign language classes the week
of the 7th of October. Students may be able to register for FETAC Level 3 in
Irish Sign Language.

For more information on class times, location and course fees, you can
contact John Patrick by text at 087 906 2947 or by email at

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE SPORTS WITH ITT.
It’s that time of year again for outdoor sports and adventures with the
Health & Leisure Dept in the Institute of Technology in Tralee. Last week,
our group had great fun surfing in Banna Beach.

Over the coming months, a range of other activities including canoeing,
kayaking, outdoor rope climbing & indoor rock climbing will take place. If
you would like to participate in these events, please send us your mobile
number and we will text you details on location, time and date. New
participants will also need to sign an indemnity form before they can
participate in any event.
