Kerry Deaf Resource Centre Update 28.09.15
CECELIA WALSH & DAVID LYNE RIP.
It’s been a sad time in the Deaf community in Co. Kerry this month. We bid a
sad & fond farewell to two members of the Deaf community Cecelia Walsh &
David Lyne.
Cecelia was one of the 1st Deaf teachers in St. Mary’s School for Deaf
Girls. She was a skilled teacher and passionate about arts & crafts,
embroidery and gardening. She will be sadly missed by her daughter Mary Jo
and all her friends in the Deaf community.
David passed away this week peacefully after a short illness. David was well
known also in the Deaf community. He was a skilled craftsman and produced
many wooden pieces, which incorporated sign language too. He was also well
known for his love of art & history. His son Andy & daughter Kathleen and
his many friends in the Deaf community will sadly miss him.
Our sincere thanks to everyone who provided support during this sad time.
SUCCESSFUL SIGN LANGUAGE AWARENESS WEEK.
We would like to congratulate all those involved in a successful Sign
Language Awareness Week which was led The Irish Deaf Society (IDS). Events
were held throughout Ireland.
The IDS would like to thank everyone who supported the event and who
participated in all the events across Ireland. A photo album of the various
activities can be viewed on the Facebook page at

SIGN LANGUAGE AWARENESS WEEK IN KERRY
In Kerry, the Kerry Deaf Group (KDG) & the Kerry Deaf Women’s Group (KDWG)
held a coffee morning in The Brogue Inn in Tralee. A local newspaper Kerry’s
Eye helped create further awareness by publishing an article on the coffee
morning in this week’s edition. Well done to Nicola Walsh, Bernadette O’
Connor, Johnny Prendergast, Bernadette White, Marion Griffin, Mary Duggan &
Noelle Reidy who were featured in the article.
This follows on from another article the Kerry’s Eye featured recently with
Patrick Doody, Geraldine Broderick and Veronica White. It’s great to see a
local paper highlight sign language and the campaign to get official
recognition of Irish Sign Language (ISL).
CONGRATS TO DR. JOHN BOSCO CONAMA ON ELL AWARD.
We would like to extend our sincere best wishes and congratulations to Dr.
John Bosco Conama for winning the 2015 European Language Label.
John has been an active campaigner to get Irish Sign Language (ISL)
officially recognised by the Irish Government. He has been closely involved
in the Irish Deaf Society’s (IDS) ISL Awareness Week. He is also an
Assistant Professor in the Centre for Deaf Studies in Trinity College.
We are thrilled to see the award being given to a person who is a great Deaf
role model to many of us in the Deaf community. He is truly deserving of the
award.

OPPOSITION LEADER ENDORSES ISL RECOGNITION CAMPAIGN
Last week, during Irish Sign Language (ISL) Week 2015, the opposition
leader, Micheál Martin TD, pledged his support to the campaign for the
recognition of Irish Sign Language. He met with Graham O’Shea from the Cork
Deaf Club, the Irish Sign Language Recognition Campaign – IDS and Lianne
Quigley of the Irish Deaf Society (IDS) to pledge his support for their
campaign.
He states on his Facebook page, “Achieving recognition of Irish Sign
Language is extremely important for Deaf people and would ensure real
equality.
The Irish Deaf Society says if the State fully recognised ISL it would
result in more legal rights for users of the language, greater access to
public services and better education for deaf children. This is an
extremely important issue and I believe the government should act in this
area. As a matter of principle we should be treating all our citizens,
including deaf people, equally.”
SUBTITLED FILM – OMNIPLEX TRALEE
Just a reminder to everyone that Tralee Omniplex is showing a subtitled
