Kerry Deaf Resource Centre Update 28.01.13
CLAY POTTERY CLASS.
We would like to thank Susanne Mooney for teaching clay and pottery making
classes last Thursday in our office. Due to the success of the classes,
Susanne is willing to offer more classes this Thursday.
Each participant will get the chance to create a number of pieces using
clay. Susanne will then bring them to a workshop in Dingle to be fired up
and glazed. When these pieces are completed, participants will be able to
bring them home.
CARD MAKING CLASS.
We would also like to thank Abigail Cahill for teaching a card making class
last Thursday in our Centre. Abigail is also on work experience and has
trained in the field of illustrations. She will be here again next Thursday
if anyone would like to meet her and learn about the craft of card making
and illustrations. Her class promises to be interesting, creative and
artistic.
SUCCESSFUL MENTAL HEALTH INTERPRETING WORKSHOP.
On the 19th January, the Sign Language Interpreters Munster (SLIM) group got
together for a session on mental health interpreting. Veronica White and
Suzanne Carey from Co. Kerry were the presenters.
Using both real-life experiences and the most comprehensive recent theories
and models, interpreters discussed issues around dealing with mental health
interpreting scenarios and had a very productive and fun day.
The workshop looked at the work of Neil Glickman and Charlene Crump in the
USA in relation to exploring options in mental health scenarios, the role of
the interpreter and how to interact with Deaf service users and mental
health practitioners during these settings.
The participants used role-play and group discussion to tease out the
issues. It was a fantastic session for those new to the area as well as
those with more experience.
The interpreters had a fantastic venue in The Arches, Mallow, which was
spacious, friendly and kept everyone liberally supplied with coffee, tea and
a great lunch! Our thanks to Cormac Leonard from www.corkinterpreter.com for
this update.

IWA PAYS 10,000 EURO FOR DISCRIMINATING DEAF MAN.
In the Irish Independent newspaper website recently, it featured an article
where a major advocate organisation for the disabled has been ordered to pay
a Deaf man 10,000 euro in compensation after a tribunal found that it
discriminated against him on the basis of disability.
The Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA) was found by the Equality Tribunal to
have discriminated against Kevin Stanley on the grounds of disability
contrary to the Employment Equality Acts by failing to provide “reasonable
accommodation” for his disability when he was invited to a job interview.
Mr Stanley, former manager of the Irish Deaf Society, had claimed that he
was discriminated against by the IWA by failing to allow him sufficient time
to book an Irish sign language (ISL) interpreter to attend a job interview
with him.
Mr Stanley, who is an assistant project researcher for the Irish Congress of
Trade Unions, said he not only feels personally vindicated by the decision
but believes it is a win for the entire Deaf community in Ireland.
He said last night: “I was disappointed and hurt by the refusal of the IWA
to reasonably accommodate a difficulty that is no fault of mine.”
Officials from the IWA did not comment on the matter in the piece.
