THE EDUCATION OF DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING CHILDREN IN IRELAND.
After many years of meetings and research, The National Council for Special
Education (NCSE) finally published a Policy Advice Paper on the Education of
Deaf and hard of hearing children.

We wanted to remind parents of this important policy document. The NCSE
believes that Deaf and hard of hearing children should be able to leave
school with levels of educational attainment that are on a par with their
hearing peers of similar ability. The NCSE hope that this policy advice will
be a positive influence in achieving this goal and in shaping the future
direction of the education of Deaf and hard of hearing children in Ireland.

Their advice emphasises the critical importance of early identification and
assessment for Deaf and hard of hearing children so that they can have
meaningful access to language as soon as possible. They have considered the
educational and health supports that are required by Deaf and hard of
hearing children in mainstream and special settings. The best national and
international evidence that was available to them at the time informed their
recommendations.

The policy is attached for those reading our newsletter in email format. For
those reading this in other formats, please contact us and we can send you
the policy by email. For more information or a printed copy of the policy,
you can contact the NCSE, 1–2 Mill Street, Trim. Co. Meath. Website:

Iron Man this week. The cinema has stated that they will do their best to
provide subtitled movies going forward. If you would like to be informed of

BEST AGECNY SUPPORTER AWARD FROM KERRY PRIDE.
Last week, LGBT Pride was celebrated in Co. Kerry. As part of the
celebrations, our Centre held an LGBT Awareness workshop, which also looked
at Same Sex Marriage. This was a very informative and interesting workshop,
which was presented by Martin Greenwood with support from Martina.

On Saturday night at the Pride Celebration Party, our Centre was presented
with the Best Agency Supporter Award. We are thrilled and honoured to have
been selected for this award. Our thanks to everyone in Kerry Pride and
Ciarrai Amach for the workshop and for the award. It will take ‘pride’ of
place in our Centre.

CARING COMMUNITIES (ROUND 2) IS NOW OPEN FOR APPLICATIONS.
The second round of Caring Communities grants is now accepting applications.

There are four distinct categories in this round: Youth Unemployment.
Emergency Respite Care. Older People. LGBT Communities.

As the aim of Caring Communities is to fund innovative and replicable
projects, which will encourage shared learning and create models for peers,
priority will be given to applicants who can clearly demonstrate that this
can be achieved.

Capital, Core or ongoing costs such as rent, salaries and the main work of
an organisation will not be supported. Additionally, successful applicants
will be encouraged to network with other grantees directly and to report on
