Kerry Deaf Resource Centre Update 26.11.12 *updated*

VISIT TO DEAF VILLAGE IRELAND.
Last week, we arranged a visit to the newly opened ‘Deaf Village Ireland’ in Dublin. We would like to thank the 16 individuals that made the trip with us and hope they enjoyed the day.

Phase One of the village is now complete and comprises of a state of the art sporting facility, administration, social, educational, heritage and religious facilities. A range of Deaf services have offices onsite including the Irish Deaf Society, Deaf Adult Literacy Service, Irish Deaf Youth Assoc, and the National Chaplaincy for Deaf People. On the day, we were given a tour of the new facility and the renovated Old Chapel wing.

We would like to thank Liam Breen of the Deaf Heritage Centre for a very interesting and informative tour of DHC. We look forward to returning to see the Centre when all the proposed renovations are complete. Its great to see Deaf Heritage being recorded and preserved for future generations.

Our thanks also to Elfrieda Carroll and the team in SLIS- the Sign Language Interpreting Service for a very informative talk on the service being provided by SLIS. We were given a very friendly welcome along with tea and biscuits too.

Kaveta Sharma from Deafhear gave us a tour of the new Deafhear office. She was a great host and we enjoyed meeting with her on the day.

We also got to visit the Life Skills Programme, which provides social and life skills to Deaf adults. We got to meet the team there and some of the participants. Our thanks to everyone there for hosting us on the day.

We also got to meet with residents and staff from St. Joseph’s House in Brewery Road and others visitors at the DDA Lounge.

Lastly, our thanks to Amanda Dunne for bringing us around the new sports facility and for ensuring we got taxi’s to catch our train back to Kerry.

During our visit, we met countless Deaf people who welcomed us warmly. To everyone who welcomed us on the day or guided us around the village- thank you sincerely. If you would like more information on DVI, go to www.deafvillageireland.ie
