UCC STUDENT RESEARCH ON ACCESS TO HEALTH SERVICES.
A student of Social Work studies in University College Cork is in the
process doing research as part of her thesis on the experiences of Deaf
people’s access to the Health Service in the south of Ireland. She has
conducted a number of interviews in Cork and is looking for a further 3 to 4
Deaf candidates. She is hoping to travel to Kerry within the next fortnight
to carry out interviews. An interpreter will be provided for this part of
her research. If you are over 23 years of age and have accessed the Irish
health service in the last five years, please contact us and we will arrange
for you to meet with her.
STUDENT PLACEMENTS WITH OUR SERVICE.
We have been very busy over the past academic year with students on
placement/ work experience from various education settings. We would like to
thank the following for choosing to come to our service and for their hard
work and dedication.
Laura Merrigan from the National Learning Network spent a considerable
amount of time with us since last September and was a fantastic resource to
our clients and staff. Ebunoluwa Osinubi is hoping to pursue Social Care and
spent a number of weeks with us in early 2012. Ebunoluwa comes from an
African background and shared with us her interesting cultural background.
Karen Walsh is pursuing a Special Needs course and completed 20 days of
placement. Karen has a Deaf sister and has sign language and proved to be a
great asset to our team.
Recently, we had Conor Patrick O’Beirne and Anthony Claffey both from the
Centre for Deaf Studies (CDS) in Trinity. They are currently in 3rd year of
their interpreter-training programme. We would like to thank Suzanne,
Veronica and Willie for mentoring these students in particular. These
students could potentially be the next generation of interpreters and it’s
so important for them to work with experienced interpreters and to gain
experience in a wide range of Deaf related settings.
We would like to thank all the above students and want to wish them all well
with their future careers.
IRISH DEAF NEWS EDITION 115.
In this week’s edition of IDN, the following news reports are presented in
sign language.
The Mahon Tribunal Report. Bertie Ahern to be expelled from Fianna Fail.
French man jumped out of window in Toulouse after killing three Jewish
children last week. Whitney Houston – Coroner said she died from accidental
drowning and cocaine found in her body.
These clips are of great interest to the Deaf community and are also an
asset to hearing students learning sign language and have been very useful
to us when we work with students from CDS on placement. To view this week’s
