LIVE CAPTIONS FOR WICKLOW COUNTY COUNCIL MEETINGS
Congratulations to Wicklow County Council, which is the first County Council
in Ireland to make their monthly meetings accessible to deaf and hard of
hearing viewers. The Council’s meetings are captioned within the Council
Chambers on a dedicated plasma screen.

And now it has gone a step further towards transparency and accessibility by
posting the captions on the internet. The Council has joined with Premier
Captioning and Realtime (PCR), a Wicklow based company, to provide
Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART), a live conversion of
speech to text. This is a very useful service to deaf and hard of hearing
people, and can also be used by people with English as their second language
to ensure that Council Meetings are accessible to all.

If you have any queries about the system you to contact Aoife Flynn, Access
& Equality Officer – Mobile/Text 087 0575938; Email [email protected];

FACEBOOK SCAM
Crooks used Facebook to steal 26,000 pounds from a Deaf man in the UK,
Kenneth Newman. They contacted Mr. Newman through his Facebook account to
tell him he had won the ‘United Nations Deaf Lottery’. Mr. Newman gave them
all the money he had saved, took out six loans and even re-mortgaged his
home when the conmen told him he had won 600,000 pounds.

Policeman Michael Loveys said police are trying to find the crooks but that
there was “little hope” of getting back the money. He also said: “There’s no
such thing as a deaf and disabled lottery. There are a number of scams like
this out there. Lots and lots of people have been scammed, but if you
haven’t entered a lottery, then you haven’t won.”

If you are contacted on Facebook by people you do not know, saying that you
have won the lottery or offering to share money, it is probably not true.
Please report any suspicious activity on Facebook using the Report button.
