Kerry Deaf Resource Centre Update 24.11.14
HOW TO MAKE CHRISTMAS DEAF FRIENDLY FOR CHILDREN
With Christmas fast approaching, the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS) in the UK has put together some top tips to help deaf children and young people feel more included at Christmas time.
The article gives families tips on how to interact with your deaf child at mealtimes, for people to be aware of background noise & lighting, how to adjust it to suit the individual child’s needs, and how to include deaf children and young people whilst watching television (subtitles) or going to a Christmas pantomime.
This is a great article to share with family, friends, and teachers etc.

COMMUNICATING WITH YOUR DEAF CHILD
The NDCS has also produced a guide to try to answer the many questions
parents have on how to best support their child’s language and communication
development, not only in the early weeks and months after the identification
of deafness following on from newborn hearing screening, but also as their
children grow and move into the wider world of pre-school experience and on
through formal education in the primary school years? Although it is written
mainly for families with an early-identified child, it is hoped that it will
also provide helpful information for families whose child’s deafness has
developed or been identified later. Where you see British Sign Language
(BSL) in the article, substitute it for Irish Sign Language (ISL)
