CONGRATULATIONS TO DR. NOEL O’CONNELL.
We would like to extend our best wishes and congratulations to Noel O’ Connell who has just been awarded a PhD. As far as we are aware, Noel is the 2nd Deaf sign language user in Ireland to be awarded a PhD. This is a
fantastic achievement for Noel and confirms again that Deaf people can compete at the highest educational and academic levels.
We believe the Centre for Deaf Studies may ask Dr. O’Connell to present his findings from his thesis at one of their evening lecture series. More information will be available in due course.
UN HIGH LEVEL MEETING ON DISABILITY AND DEVELOPMENT.
Heads of State and Government gathered at United Nations Headquarters in New
York on 23 September 2013, to reaffirm their resolve to work together for
disability inclusive development and the commitment of the international
community to the advancement of the rights of all persons with disabilities
which is deeply rooted in the goals of the United Nations Charter and the
Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
There is concerns that this commitment has yet to be fully translated into
the inclusion of disability in internationally agreed development goals,
including the Millennium Development Goals and, as 2015 approaches, the UN
strongly reiterate their determination to ensure the timely realization of
the Millennium Development Goals and other internationally agreed
development goals for persons with disabilities who make up an estimated 15
per cent of the world’s population, or 1 billion people of whom an estimated
80 per cent live in developing countries.

IDYA WORKSHOP
The Irish Deaf Youth Association would like to inform you of upcoming
workshops they are running in Co. Kerry.
The 1st workshop will be ‘Personal Development’, which will be held on the
12th of October. The 2nd workshop will be focussed on ‘Careers’ and this
will run on the 23rd of November.
These workshops are about discovering what life is about; regain your
identity, rediscover your motivation, rebuilt your self-esteem and make a
positive and independence difference in your life. For the better!”
Workshops will be held in Deafhear Killarney from 9.30-5pm and open to those

WORKSHOP FOR PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH COCHLEAR IMPLANTS
DeafHear in conjunction with Our New Ears parents group is hosting a seminar
aimed at parents/guardians of pre-school children with a cochlear implant.
The weekend will be held on Saturday 2nd to Sunday 3rd November 2013 in The
Heritage Hotel, Portlaoise.
The topics they hope to cover are as follows:
Empowering parents to make choices, Preparing child for preschool, School
issues, Role of visiting teacher, Positive parenting including 3 topics.
Examples include discipline, toilet training and tantrums. DeafHear role,
their role in parenting a deaf child and how they can help, Communication in
the home, Talk from adult/ older teen with CI, Group sessions and
discussions, Technical session – loop system, developments etc.

SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETED PERFORMANCE OF ‘WICKED’.
The Bord Gais Energy Theatre in Dublin will stage an ISL Signed Performance
of the well-known Broadway & West End show ‘Wicked’ on Tuesday 10th December
at 7.30pm. Discounted tickets will be available for 55 euro and there is no
