KERRY DEAF RESOURCE CENTRE UPDATE 23.05.11
PRESIDENT USES SIGN LANGUAGE AT QUEEN’S VISIT
President Mary McAleese welcomed Queen Elizabeth II on her visit to Ireland
last week. As part of the visit a tree was planted at Áras an Uachtaráin to
mark the occasion and the Peace Bell was rung by two young deaf people
16-year-old Danny Rea, who attends the Northern Ireland Jordanstown School
for the Deaf and Leah Ennis McLoughlin, who attends St Mary’s School for
Deaf Girls in Cabra.
President McAleese chatted with them both asking where they were from and
telling them that they did a great job! She also introduced them to the
Queen. In an interview with the Evening Herald newspaper Leah said, “I felt
honoured and proud to represent my school and all the deaf girls here.”
The ceremony was shown on television and got great coverage in all the
media. Listeners to the Joe Duffy radio show in particular were taken by
President McAleese’s sign language skills. The President’s sister, Clare
Connolly, came on the show to explain that they have a Deaf brother who uses
Sign Language. The President has been a great supporter of the Deaf
Community throughout her time in office and is patron of Sign Language
Interpreting Service (SLIS).

DEAF LESBIAN FESTIVAL DUBLIN
The 1st European Deaf Lesbian Festival (DLF) will take place in Dublin from
the 22–26 June 2011. The Festival will include events such as workshops,
games, social networking and lots of sightseeing to many of Ireland’s hot
spots! The theme of the festival is empowering Deaf lesbian and bisexual
women about their multicultural status, and building social networks. The
festival aims to raise awareness about discrimination.
The festival has its origins from a Deaf Women United (DWU) event in USA in
1998 and their drive to celebrate “herstory”! This led to the first DLF in
Washington DC and then others in Texas, San Francisco and Long Island. The
next DLF will be held in Chicago in 2012. This is a one of a kind festival,
a celebration of the global cultural identify of being Deaf and
lesbian/bisexual women while reclaiming Deaf culture and promoting the
linguistic use of sign language and the respect of Deaf lesbian and bisexual
women sexuality.
