Kerry Deaf Resource Centre Update 20.12.10
SUPPORTER OF THE YEAR AWARDS
Unfortunately due to snow and icy roads, we had to cancel our Christmas
party this weekend. Our apologies to everyone for the short cancellation
notice. Safety was a major concern for us. At our party, we usually announce
the Supporter of the Year Awards. However, we thought it would be nice to
inform everyone of the winners before Christmas. We have two categories Deaf
Supporter Awards, and Hearing Supporter Awards.
DEAF SUPPORTER OF THE YEAR.
John Bosco Conama Phd.
“For your commitment to the Deaf community over the years. You have been
involved in many Deaf related committees and working groups in Ireland. You
have campaigned on Deaf issues and Deaf rights on a national and
international level. You have worked tirelessly to improve the lives of Deaf
people in Ireland. You have been an excellent role model on a personal,
academic and professional level. We would also like to congratulate you on
being the 1st Deaf person in Ireland to be awarded a PhD.”
Christina O Donoghue
We would like to thank you for all the work you have done in the past year
for our clients and service. Our clients benefit greatly from the literacy,
computers and art classes you provide to them. We appreciate all your hard
work.
Patrick Doody
We would like to thank you for all the work you have done in the past year
for our clients and service. You have been a great worker– you work well on
your own and in groups. You work in a very professional and courteous
manner. Your ability to engage with our clients is remarkable. Your
personality is liked by all those who meet you.
HEARING SUPPORTER OF THE YEAR AWARDS
Christina O’Driscoll- hearing parent of a deaf daughter with a cochlear
implant.
“For your commitment to learning about Deaf issues. For your positive
attitude to learning sign language and for including family members in
classes. For assisting with fundraising activities for our service”.
Ann Sheehan- Care Group Co-ordinator for Disability (HSE).
“For your support and commitment to Deaf issues and to the Deaf Community in
Kerry. For actively working with our service in developing a “Sign Language
Interpreting Access Policy” to enable Deaf people access GP services. For
co-ordinating inter-agency meetings on behalf of our clients. For being a
direct link between our service and the Health Service Executive”.
Institute of Technology Tralee Health & Leisure Department- staff and
students.
“For including Deaf people in a range of sporting activities– this included
surfing, adventure games, canoeing & kayaking, outdoor high ropes activities
and indoor wall climbing. We thoroughly enjoyed all the activities. Staff
and students worked very hard to ensure all of us enjoyed each event. Their
hospitality and friendliness was appreciated by everyone that participated.”
HSE Hearing Services (Tralee).
“For your commitment and support of people with a hearing loss. In
particular we would like to thank Marian and Joanne for all their hard work–
it is greatly appreciated. The advice, information and support provided to
our service and clients is greatly appreciated.
HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR.
On behalf of our service, we would like to wish everyone a happy Christmas
and happy New Year. To our clients, staff and supporters- a big thank you
for all your hard work and support in 2010. We will close for holidays at
lunch time on the 22nd of December and will re-open on the 5th of January.
In the meantime, with this icy and snowy weather- keep safe on the roads and
keep warm. Look forward to working with everyone again in 2011.
CHRISTMAS EVE MASS
Lastly, if you would like to attend a sign language interpreted Mass on
Christmas Eve, Veronica White will be interpreting in The Dominican Church
in Tralee at 7.30pm.
