Kerry Deaf Resource Centre Update 20.06.16

KDRC MANAGER TRAVELLING TO ETHIOPIA IN AUGUST.

Our Manager Willie White will be travelling to Ethiopia to work with the Deaf community for 3 weeks in August. This will be his 4th volunteer trip to Africa and his 3rd visit to Ethiopia.

The aim of the trip is to provide workshops and training to Deaf adults and children who communicate through Ethiopian Sign Language in Ambo, Bahir Dar and Addis Ababa. These workshops will also be open to their hearing relatives, friends and supporters.

Willie is paying for his own flights, vaccinations & accommodation in Ambo. However, he is fundraising to help with the costs of bringing a Deaf tutor with him to Ambo for 4 days. In addition, he hopes to give each Deaf adult participant in Ambo a daily allowance for attending the 4-day training programme there.

Willie will then travel to Bahir Dar with Visions Global Empowerment for 10 days. All participants are expected to contribute approx. $1,200 US Dollars towards their work with the Deaf community there. He will then finish off his trip in Addis Ababa where he will also work with the Deaf community.

RESEARCH ON BARRIERS FOR DEAF ACCESSING PUBLIC SERVICES

Tom Martin & Jim Mc Devitt of TMA Management Consultants have been asked by the Citizens Information Board to undertake research on the barriers faced by the Deaf Community in accessing public information and in accessing public services.

Tom & Jim hope to meet with representatives of the Deaf community in the coming weeks to examine the issues that Deaf people experience when they try to access services from Government Departments & public services.

They are also planning to develop a questionnaire in sign language in the coming weeks. As soon as this is available, we will share it with you in one of our updates.

We would like to thank Tom & Jim for hosting a Skype meeting with our Manager last Friday. Our service is delighted to have been given the opportunity to participate in this important research.
