Kerry Deaf Resource Centre Update 18.05.08

Our service will hold a fundraising event in Castleisland on the 22nd and
23rd of May. We are looking for volunteers to fundraise outside Garvey’s
supermarket. If you are available, please let us know? Our thanks to
Garvey’s for allocating these days to our Centre.

BreastCheck – The National Breast Screening Programme has arrived in Tralee
to provide women with free breast x-rays (mammograms). The Government-funded
screening service is offered to women aged between 50 and 64 and BreastCheck
urges all invited women to attend their appointment.

Women should advise in advance if special needs are to be accommodated.  A
sign language interpreter can be made available on request at the
BreastCheck screening units. All BreastCheck screening units are fully
accessible to people with disability.

Women will be screened at a BreastCheck mobile digital screening unit
located at Kerry Community Services Headquarters, Rathass, Tralee, Co Kerry.
A BreastCheck mammogram is a simple procedure that takes approximately half
an hour in total and is offered to women aged between 50 and 64 every two
years. The aim of screening is to detect early breast cancer. The vast
majority of women screened are found to be perfectly healthy with less than
one per cent diagnosed with cancer.

BreastCheck advises all women aged between 50 and 64 living in Tralee and
surrounding areas to make sure their name is on the BreastCheck register. We
can make a call on your behalf to 1800 45 45 55. Alternatively, you can fill
in an application form or go online at

In September 2008, Ireland’s first national cervical screening programme was
introduced. CervicalCheck – The National Cervical Screening Programme
provides free smear tests to women aged between 25 and 60. Having a regular
smear test is the most effective way of reducing a woman’s risk of
developing cervical cancer.

A smear test is a simple procedure that can detect pre-cancerous cells in
the cervix (neck of the womb). Screening will be provided every three years
to women aged between 25 and 44 and once they have received two ‘no
abnormality detected results’ every five years to women aged 45 to 60. The
great majority of tests are found to be negative or normal.

To have a free smear test, please arrange an appointment with a smeartaker
(doctor or practice nurse) of your choice who is registered with
CervicalCheck. If you need an interpreter, the HSE needs to be contacted in
advance for sanctioning for an interpreter. CervicalCheck has registered
over 4,050 smeartakers nationwide and 94 smeartakers (GPs, practice nurses,
Women’s Health, Family Planning and Well Woman Clinics) in Co Kerry. A full
list of registered smeartakers can be found under the ‘Find a smeartaker’
section on the CervicalCheck website ( or by calling
Freephone 1800 45 45 55.
