REMINDER OF THE 6TH WORLD CONGRESS ON MENTAL HEALTH AND DEAFNESS &
PRESENTATION SUBMISSIONS.
The 6th WCMHD congress will be held in Belfast on the 16th – 19th September.
It is being organised by the European Society for Mental Health and Deafness
and co-hosted by Queen’s University Belfast. The congress features a
specific theme, which is the relationship between human rights and mental
health of deaf people.
On the WCMHD website it states “We invite delegates from all countries who
have an interest in the subject and the theme. We believe that the stronger
the representation, the more likely it will be that the conference will be
able to influence policy-makers and help to improve lives. Application
details will be available at this website shortly.
All delegates are invited to submit proposed presentations. The time
allocated to a submitted talk is 25min, which would usually include 5min for
questions. We will provide interpreters for British Sign Language, Irish
Sign Language and International Sign Language, as well as Speech to Text
Report. The official spoken and written language of the Congress will be
English.
Delegates who are interested in presenting should submit a title and an
abstract of not more than 300 words through this website (available
shortly). They will be reviewed by the scientific committee, and the papers
most highly rated by the committee will be chosen for presentation at the
conference.
Title and abstract should be submitted by April 30th using the Registration
Form. Proposals will not be considered unless at least one presenter has
registered for the conference by the review date. Notice of acceptance will
be one month after the closing date.
For more information on the congress, go to http://www.wcmhd2014.org/
EXPRESSION OF INTEREST FOR INTERPRETERS FOR THE WCMHD
The congress is also look for an expression of interest to interpret at the
forthcoming 6th WCMHD. The organisers are hoping to have a team of 6 Irish
Sign Language Interpreters.
Interpreters will be required from 9am – 5.30pm on the 17th & 18th of Sept
and from 9am – 4pm on the 19th of Sept. If interested, interpreters will
need to submit an estimate including travel and accommodation. Funding is
being sourced to cover costs & they would appreciate if travel costs can be
kept to a minimum.
The organisers will endeavour to get all presentations from speakers prior
to the event, and will make sure speakers can make themselves available for
a Skype (or equivalent) session with interpreters, or available for a
meeting with interpreters prior to the event. Papers and speakers are yet to
be confirmed. Further information will be available for interpreters in due
course at http://www.wcmhd2014.org/

WOMEN’S AID TEXT SERVICE FOR DEAF OR HARD OF HEARING WOMEN
Women’s Aid helps thousands of women affected by domestic violence every
year. The Women’s Aid National Freephone Helpline can now offer support to
deaf or hard of hearing women through their text service.
You can text them on 087 959 7980 between 10am to 10pm, 7 days a week and
they will text you back. All texts are treated in the strictest confidence.
In addition, they can support you face to face by using an interpreter. The
interpreter can be someone you feel comfortable with or Women’s Aid can
arrange an interpreter through the Irish Deaf Society.
You can also watch a segment on domestic abuse against deaf and hard of
hearing women in Ireland from the Hands On Programme, RTE One. This segment
has subtitles but no audio. It contains scenes that some viewers may find
upsetting. This was first broadcasted in December 2012 and uploaded to
Women’s Aid website with the kind permission of Mind the Gap Films.
