Kerry Deaf Resource Centre Update 15.06.15
SERVICES FOR PARENTS OF DEAF/ HARD OF HEARING CHILDREN.
This week our update focuses on the supports we provide to families of a deaf child.
Has your child been diagnosed as being deaf or hard of hearing? Do you suspect that your child may be deaf? We have a range of information that may help you.
Did you know? 90% of deaf and hard-of-hearing children are born to hearing parents most of whom have never met a Deaf person and would know very little about the Deaf Community (Irish Deaf Society)
For some families when they are told their baby has a hearing loss, the news can come as a great shock. Some parents will be upset by the news, others will be relieved that their suspicions have finally been confirmed. There is no right or wrong way to feel and it’s important to take the time to adjust, to look after yourself and consider how you are feeling (National Deaf Children’s Society UK)
FAMILY SUPPORT.
If your child is deaf – what do you do next? We will do our best to support
you, your child and your family. When you are ready and or want to – we can
put you in touch with other parents who have gone through a similar
experience. We can introduce your child to other deaf children. We can
introduce you to Deaf adults.
How will I communicate with my child? We will give you information and
support on communicating with a deaf child. We will put you in touch with
other professionals who can give you information on language – sign language
and/or speech.
If you choose to learn sign language, we can give you a list of sign
language apps and websites to help you learn. We can apply for Home Tuition
in sign language classes for you & your family.
Are there any grants a parent can apply for? There is a grant called the
Domiciliary Care Allowance that is paid monthly. It is paid to parents of a
child with a disability.
We have the forms in our office & will assist you in applying for this
grant.
What about educational supports? We will make a referral for your child to
the Visiting Teacher of the deaf & hard of hearing. This teacher can give
you information on mainstream and specialist schools. They will also advise
you on Special Needs Assistants & other educational support services. They
will advise you on technology that is available for deaf and hard of hearing
students.
Are there any other supports available? There are a wide number of
organisations that provide advice, guidance and support.
