DEAF WOMEN’S SURVEY.
Ann Coogan and Josephine O’Leary, two well-known and prominent Deaf women in
Ireland are doing a research project on Deaf women in Ireland in 2011. Their
aim is to collect 300 completed surveys throughout Ireland. As this is a
national survey, they would like some input from Deaf women in Kerry.

The survey looks at issues such as education, training courses, career/jobs,
life long learning, university, social activities, volunteer activities,
your living situation and the unique signs that Deaf women use to
communicate.

The survey is completely confidential. If you would like a copy of this,
please contact us and we can post/fax a copy to you. If you would like
assistance in filling in the form, please let us know and we will arrange
for a staff member of your choice to assist you.

CHRISTMAS FAIR IN AID OF THE IRISH/ ETHIOPIAN DEAF PROJECT.
A fundraising fair will take place on the 20th of November from 2-5pm in aid
of the Irish/Ethiopian Deaf Project. It will be held in the Ballyphehane
Community Centre in Cork. Admission is free. The fair will sell Arts,
Crafts, Jewellery, Christmas Flower Arrangements, Candles, Cakes, Handbags,
Beautician and lots, lots more. Santa will also be there. Raffles and face
painting will also take place.

As many of you know, funding has been secured to purchase land and build a
Deaf Centre in Ambo in Ethiopia. This time last year, a group from Ireland
travelled to Ethiopia for training and workshops including our own Willie
White and Veronica White. Please show your support and come along to this
event. All money raised will go towards the project in Ambo. A huge thanks
to the volunteers who have arranged the fundraiser.

EUD DECLARATION ON ACCESSIBLE 112 EMERGENCY SERVICES.
The European Union of the Deaf is proud to be co-ordinating the Written
Declaration 35/2011 campaign on accessible 112 emergency services. This
Written Declaration (WD112) was initiated by the Romanian Deaf Association
and is supported by EENA, the European Emergency Number Association and
EFHOH, the European Federation of Hard of Hearing People.

The Declaration:
Calls for accessible 112 emergency services.
Calls for legislation and standardisation in EU Member States.
Video technologies that support sign language and text-based systems.

All MEP’s from Cyprus and Estonia have signed the declaration. We must
ensure that Ireland also signs up for this Declaration- emergency services
are not accessible in Ireland to Deaf and hard of hearing citizens. This
puts their lives and the lives of their family members and friends at risk
if they are unable to access emergency services.

CONGRATS TO HANDS THAT TALK
We would like to extend our best wishes to Hands That Talk, which is based
in Dungiven. They won Best Voluntary/Charity Project in the UK National
Lottery and secured funding worth 508,055 sterling.

Hands That Talk http://www.handsthattalk.co.uk/ is a cross-community,
voluntary organisation which seeks to engender a pride in the Deaf
Community, its culture and language and promote a greater interest in and
awareness of Deaf people, whilst acknowledging the valid contribution that
they make to society.

HANDS ON IS BACK ON RTE.
The new series of Hands On started again on Sunday the 13th of November at
12pm on RTE One.

The first programme featured an item on ‘Third Level Education’. Hands On
met with students to find out about their experiences and to get some
valuable advice from Deaf Support in 3rd Level and the Association of Higher
Education Access & Disability on how to overcome the challenges and make the
most of the exciting years at college.

It also looked at Eddie Redmond, a presenter on the programme and his dream
of being a chat show host with the new strand, ‘Take 5’. Throughout the
series Eddie will meet some fascinating characters from the Irish and
International Deaf community and find out more about their lives and
achievements.

It also went behind the scenes at RTE when the Irish Deaf Community made
history! RTÉ is the first national channel to broadcast the news and weather
in sign language.
Make sure to tune in every Sunday from now until February to catch some
fascinating stories, important information of interest to the Deaf community
and exciting challenges.
