Kerry Deaf Resource Centre Update 14.10.13
RTE SHOWING PROGRAMMES WITH SIGN LANGUAGE.
RTE have informed us that they intend to air a number of programmes starting
in October that will be interpreted into sign language. The programmes are
currently being recorded in the UK by Sign Post productions.
The programmes will be shown very early in the morning so we would recommend
people to set their Sky TV, videos or DVD systems to record. The first
programmes will be aired on the 18th of October and will include:
Don’t Tell the Bride (1.25am).
Dirty Old Town (2.25am).
The Takeover (3.15am).
This is the first time RTE will be showing programmes of this type with sign
language. This will start to bring RTE in line with TV Broadcasting Access
Rules that obligates RTE to show 1.25% of programmes with sign language.
Hopefully in the future, they will also show them at a later time to attract
a wider audience.
SEANAD EIREANN SUPPORTS ISL RECOGNITION CAMPAIGN.
As part of the IDS campaign to get official recognition of Irish Sign
Language (ISL), Seanad Eireann (Senate In Irish) passed a motion unanimously
calling on the government to recognise ISL.
The motion called on the Government to:
Recognise unequivocally Irish Sign Language as the preferred sign language
of the deaf community in the State: Recognise Irish Sign Language as an
expression of culture and an instrument for access to education and equal
opportunities; Notes and commends the work of the many State and
non-governmental organisations to support and promote the use of Irish Sign
Language in the State; Calls on the Government in partnership with the
representatives of the deaf community to develop ideas for improving access
to public services by users of Irish Sign Language; and Calls on the
Government to target initiatives which would enhance the effective
availability of interpreters and interpretation solutions such as using
technology for remote access to services.”.

SHOULD DEAF PEOPLE BE ABLE TO SERVE ON JURIES?
Over the years, there has been significant debate on whether Deaf people
should be able to serve on Juries. Professor Jemina Napier Chair of
Intercultural Communication in the Department of Languages & Intercultural
Studies in the School of Management and Languages
Heriot-Watt University has released an edited version of a recent
presentation she gave on Deaf Juror Research projects that she has been
running since 2006. The presentation will be of interest to those who want
to sit on juries in Ireland or who have campaigned to allow Deaf people sit
on juries.
The presentation is in British Sign Language with voice-over and copies of
powerpoint presentations and can be viewed at
