SUCCESSFUL  WORKSHOP  FOR  MUNSTER  INTERPRETERS
Sign Language Interpreters Munster (SLIM) organised a successful workshop
over the weekend for interpreters across the Munster region including our
own Kerry based interpreters. The theme of the training was “Effective
Communication” was presented by Thomas Riedmuller.

The training took place in a wonderful setting “The Hollies” in Enniskeane
in West Cork. The Hollies aims to create working examples of what a
sustainable society might look like in the areas of housing, energy,
gardening, economics and community development. For more information, go to

THANK  YOU  TO  DEAFHEAR  KILLARNEY
We would like to extend our thanks to Deafhear Killarney for an open
invitation to our clients & staff to a “Stress Management” course which
started last Thursday.

The course is looking at the stresses and worries in our lives. Participants
will learn to support each other and learn how to manage stress better. It
will also look at the importance of healthy eating for healthy living. A
sign language interpreter has been booked for the duration of the course.

FR  STEPHEN  MONAGHAN – CELEBRATING  25  YEARS
A Thanksgiving Mass will be held to celebrate Fr. Stephen’s 25 years of
priesthood on Friday 18th September at 7 pm in the Emmaus Chapel, Deaf
Village Ireland, Cabra, Dublin 7.  Stephen is well known in the Deaf
Community and is the founder of the Ethiopia Deaf Project.

Refreshments will be served afterwards in the Atrium.  The organisers would
appreciate it if those attending could bring cakes for everyone to share.

IRISH  SIGN  LANGUAGE  (ISL)  AWARENESS  WEEK  2015
ISL Awareness Week will be held from Sunday 20th September through to
Saturday 26th September.  There will be many events held around the country
to suit all the family ranging from fun days to social and sporting events.
This week is an important element of the campaign to get ISL officially
recognised by the Irish Government.

Sunday 20th September: A Social Gathering for Families will be held from
11am–1pm at The Planet, Blackpool, Co. Cork.  All are welcome and it is
5euro per child.  www.planetcork.ie

Family Fun Day will be held from 11am–3pm at the Regional Sports Centre,
Cork Road, Waterford.  Activities include a Bouncy Castle, face painting,
sweet shop and many more.  Entry is free.

Monday 21st September: Men’s Group Soccer in the Sports Village, Model Farm
Road, Cork from 2pm–5pm.

Lianne Quigley, Vice-chairperson of the Irish Deaf Society, will give a
presentation on “Why we Campaign for ISL Recognition?”  in the Cork Deaf
Association from 7pm–9pm.  An Interpreter and refreshments will be provided
on the evening.

Tuesday 22nd September: Kerry Deaf Group/Kerry Deaf Women’s Group will be
celebrating ISL Awareness Week with a coffee morning in Kirby’s Brogue Inn,
Rock Street, Tralee at 11am.  Women and men are welcome to attend.

Cork Deaf Women’s Group are also holding a coffee morning in Isaac’s
restaurant, MacCurtain Street, Cork.  Men and women are welcome!  Tea,
coffee and scones are 4.20 euro.

Do you fancy yourself a bowler?  Why not turn up at 12.30pm in the

The Centre for Deaf Studies (CDS) and the Irish Deaf Society (IDS) are
holding a Conference with a working title “What can we learn from Europe?
The case for ISL recognition.”  They have invited two prominent experts to
make presentations: Dr. Rachel O’Neill (University of Edinburgh) and Ms.
Kaisa Alanne (Finnish Association of the Deaf).  The Conference will be held
from 6.15pm–9pm in the Long Room Hub, Trinity College, University of Dublin,
Dublin.

Dublin Deaf Women’s Group are meeting up in the Insomnia Café, Navan Road,
Cabra, Dublin 7 at 11am.  They hope to see you there and men and women are
welcome.

Wednesday 23rd September: This year the ISL Rally will be held from 3pm–6pm
outside Leinster House, Dublin.  Please go along and show your support!

Thursday 24th September: ISL Awareness to the Public.  The Cork Deaf
Association will be holding this event from 11am–2pm in the Cork Deaf
Association.

Friday 25th September: Deaf Women’s Social Group/Workshop will be presented
by Nora Duggan from 8pm–10pm in the Cork Deaf Club.  There will also be a
chance to talk to Gaye Regan and Sinead Winter.  This is strictly women
only!

Saturday 26th September: Gaye Regan and Sinead Winter will present as part
of The Deaf Women’s Leadership Workshop from 10am–4pm in the Cork Deaf Club.
