Kerry Deaf Resource Centre Update 14.07.14

CONTACT  LOCAL  TD’s  TO  SUPPORT  DEAFORWARD
As it was mentioned in our last newsletter, the IDS’s advocacy service, Deaforward, has had its funding withdrawn.  We are asking you to please contact your local Fine Gael (FG) and Labour TD’s this week to stress to Minister Phil Hogan the important service that Deaforward provided to the Deaf community and to reinstate the service’s funding.  Without this valuable service the Deaf community would not have access to public services, education, healthcare and the means to employment.  The service’s closure puts the Deaf community at further risk of social and economic isolation and a decline in living standards.

SUCCESS  FOR  IRISH  DEAF  CHANNEL  SWIMMERS
Many congratulations to the seven very brave Irish Deaf women, one of whom
is Bernadette White from Tralee, who have just completed swimming the
English Channel from Dover to Calais.  They must be feeling a huge relief
that all went well.  It is not too late to make a donation to the Irish Deaf
Women’s Group by going to the following link:

STREET  COLLECTION  IN  KILLARNEY
Many thanks to all those who volunteered last Friday in Killarney for our
Street Collection and to those who donated to help raise money for our
centre.

RING  OF  KERRY  CHARITY  CYCLE  2014
Congratulations to Veronica White, Geraldine Broderick and Patrick Doody
from our centre here who completed the 180 kms charity cycle around the Ring
of Kerry on Saturday 5th July.  They returned exhausted but exhilarated and
extremely proud of themselves for their achievement.

AMBO  RAMBLE  FOR  ETHIOPIA  DEAF  SCHOOL  PROJECT
Well done and thank you to the many participants and volunteers in this year
’s Ambo Ramble for the Ethiopia Deaf School Project which was held on Sunday
29th June.  Everyone had a very enjoyable day cycling around Co. Cork and
either completed the 40 kms or 120 kms route taking off from Ballinhassig.
Due to all the many donations 4500 euro has been raised for the school.

RTÉ  TEST  SUBTITLES  FOR  RTÉ  PLAYER
The Irish Deaf Society (IDS) along with other Deaf organisations have been
invited to RTÉ this week to test the proposed subtitles for the RTÉ player.
The RTÉ player is a free online catch-up service on RTÉ One and RTÉ Two that
allows you to watch a variety of programmes for up to 21 days after they
have been broadcast.  All the Deaf organisations have been lobbying for this
for a long time and it is very welcome to see that progress is being made at
long last.

At the moment the RTÉ player shows selected programmes in Irish Sign
Language.  To see what programmes are shown in Irish Sign Language, go to:
