CODA 2020 STRATEGIC PLANNING SURVEY
CODA (Children of Deaf Adults) International established an ad-hoc “CODA 2020 Strategic Planning Work Team” to work on developing and drafting a plan for the organisation’s consideration. The committee was Chaired by Krista Leitch Walker (Germantown, MD, USA), and included our own Willie White.

DEVELOPMENT OF ACCESSIBILITY APP SURVEY
Robert Quinlan is doing a project for his final year BA Multimedia at CIT.
The project is the development of an app, which will improve accessibility
at museums and other heritage and cultural centres. The app will be
suitable for people who are Deaf, hard of hearing, Deafblind, blind/people
with sight loss, and people for whom English is not their native language.
Finding out people’s opinions and their access needs are an important part
of the app development. For this reason Robert would like you to
participate in a survey. It is quite short and should only take 2-3 minutes

NATIONAL DEAFBLIND AWARENESS DAY
The Anne Sullivan Foundation for Deafblind People are asking you to join
them for National Deafblind Awareness Day on Saturday the 18th April between
2pm and 4pm at Tallaght Stadium. There will be Exhibition Stands on the day
from a range of other organisations and service providers. Guest Speakers
include Orla O’Sullivan and Joanne Milne. Entrance is Free and all are

WOMAN LOBBIES FOR USHER SYNDROME RECOGNISED AS DISABILITY
Carol Brill has type two Usher Syndrome, a genetic condition that causes
combined sight and hearing loss. Carol is working with two organisations,
Fighting Blindness and the Anne Sullivan Foundation for Deafblind People
along with other stakeholders. They are campaigning to get legislation
passed in this country to have deaf-blindness recognised as a disability so
that services can be put in place.
Carol was recently interviewed on TV for the Nationwide programme. She
believes more needs to be done for people who are deafblind. Carol is hoping
that legislation recognising deaf-blindness, as a disability will be passed

NEW OBAMA RECEPTIONIST BREAKS DOWN BARRIERS
Every now and then we like to include a good news story. This news item
highlights the possibilities that Deaf people, given the right opportunities
and support, are able to achieve and thereby make a real contribution to
their communities. Leah Katz-Hernandez, 27, is Deaf and works in the White
House. “It’s a fantastic opportunity shows that Deaf people can do
anything,” she said through an interpreter, who is provided for her at work.
With a desk just steps away from the Oval Office, Katz-Hernandez is usually
the first to greet anyone from world leaders to White House staff members
who have an appointment with the President or his top-level aides. She also
oversees the White House guest book and the Roosevelt Room, the West Wing
meeting room, and is responsible for collecting cell phones before meetings
with the president.
“Katz Hernandez is defined by her accomplishments, not her disability”, said

SUBTITLED FILM IN TRALEE OMNIPLEX
The next subtitled film, Cinderella, is to be screened in the Tralee
Omniplex on Wednesday 15th April at 8.20 pm. When her father unexpectedly
passes away, young Ella finds herself at the mercy of her cruel stepmother
and her daughters. Never one to give up hope, Ella’s fortunes begin to
change after meeting a dashing stranger. The film stars Cate Blanchett and
Lily James and is directed by Kenneth Branagh.
