STREET COLLECTION KILLARNEY- VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED.
We have a street collection in Killarney on the 15th of July and require
volunteers. With restricted funding, this event is a very important source
of income for our service.

If you are available for a few hours, please let us know.

DEMOLITION OF ST. JOSEPH’s SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF.
An historical yet sad event for many in the Deaf community took place last
week in Dublin. St Joseph’s School for Deaf Boys in Cabra, a Victorian
four-storey building with Tudor character, which was constructed in 1856,
was demolished.

This is to make way for work on a €15 million project “The Deaf Village”.
The building of the Deaf Village will be spread over three phases, with
Phase one being the most significant and costly. Phase one will entail the
provision of new sporting, administration, social, educational, heritage and
religious facilities. In Phase one there will also be some overnight
accommodation for visitors and parents to the Village.

Phases two and three will comprise the proposed amalgamation of the Cabra
schools and residences for Deaf Boys and Girls and the moving of St. Joseph’
s House Brewery road from Stillorgan to Cabra to become part of the Deaf
Village, together with new independent living facilities. Another aspect of
the Village is the establishment of a Centre for Deaf Education managed
jointly by Deafhear.ie, the IDS, CIDP, CDS Trinity College and the Deaf
schools.

REMINDER OF TRIP TO KENMARE
Just a quick reminder to all those involved in the upcoming “Cool Youth
Club” trip to Kenmare. The camp will run from the 17th to the 23rd of July.
This promises to be an exciting event with a five full day programme with
activities such as canoeing, sailing, games, team challenges, water
trampolines and cruising.

For those travelling from Kerry, please contact Veronica White to confirm
travel arrangements to and from the camp. For those travelling from Cork,
the camp Co-ordinator is Susan O’Callaghan.

We hope everyone involved has a great time. Our thanks to Susan and Cork
Deaf Association for including Deaf people from Kerry in the camp.

DEAFHEAR ONLINE SURVEY FOR PARENTS WITH DEAF CHILDREN
DeafHear´s has launched an online survey on the experiences of parents of
deaf and hard of hearing children in Ireland.

This comprehensive survey will provide important information on the issues
faced by parents of children with hearing loss. This information will assist
DeafHear in providing the services and supports required by parents and
children into the future, and also in lobbying and influencing other service
providers to respond to the needs and issues identified in the survey.

The survey will be open for a number of months, and initial results will be
published on their website on their new section “Parents Corner” in the
autumn.

OUR SYMPATHIES
We would like to extend our sympathies to the family, friends and colleagues
of Laura Sadlier who passed away unexpectedly last week. Laura was in her
early thirties, a sign language interpreter and a lecturer in the Centre for
Deaf Studies in Trinity College.

In a statement made by the Centre for Deaf Studies “Laura’s passing has left
us with a significant gap that will be very hard to fill. Her warmth,
kindness, humour, intelligence and skill will be sadly missed by us all. Our
condolences go to her family and many friends in the Deaf community, the
interpreting community and the international academic Deaf Studies
community”.
