Kerry Deaf Resource Centre Update 11.02.13
VIDEO-CLIP OF OFFICAL OPENING OF DEAF SCHOOL IN ETHIOPIA.
As many of you are aware, a group of people from Ireland including our own
Veronica White and Willie White have been actively involved in supporting
the development of a Deaf school in Ambo, Ethiopia.
We are delighted to show you a 5-minute video clip of the official opening.
The Lord Mayor of Ambo, the Irish Ambassador to Ethiopia and representatives
from VLM- the Vincentian Lay Missionaries, officially opened the school.
Stephen Monaghan represented the Irish community- our sincere thanks to him
for all his work to date on the project and to everyone who has supported us
in any way over the past few years.
CDS STUDENTS OF PLACEMENT.
Last week, we had the pleasure of working with Annik Dennehy, a 3rd year
student in the Centre for Deaf Studies (CDS) in Trinity College. This week
we welcome two more students.
Caroline Corrigan is a fourth year student in CDS, studying Irish Sign
Language (ISL)/ English Interpreting. She first learned ISL while still at
school, taking evening classes for a few months. Initially Caroline studied
Interior Design. ISL was put on hold for a while but the interest was always
there. A few years ago she took up ISL classes again and then decided to
apply to CDS to study interpreting. In recent years Caroline has volunteered
for Dublin Deaf Drama and the Irish Deaf Women’s Group.
Amanda Mohan is a final year student in CDS, training to become an
ISL/English Interpreter. Her interested in learning ISL was sparked by her
grandmother, whose parents were Deaf. She has been actively involved in the
Deaf Community for the past 4 years, and was most recently involved in the
Sencity Dublin event held in the RDS. She is from Drogheda, Co. Louth, and
is on the committee of the Drogheda Deaf Society.
We would like to welcome both Caroline and Amanda to our service and to Co.
Kerry. If anyone would like to meet with them this week, let us know.
TWO-DAY WORKSHOP FOR ADULTS WITH OR WAITING FOR COCHLEAR IMPLANTS (CI).
Sally Harvest from Deafhear in Killarney would like to inform adults with or
waiting for a CI that a 2 day workshop will be held in the Killarney
Dromhall Hotel from the 11th-13th of March.
Deafhear would like to open this up to as many clients as possible from all
over Ireland. This will give them the opportunity to meet others with the
same ‘listening device’ and discuss challenges and successful management of
their (or their partners) CI process and rehabilitation.
If you would like further information, please contact Sally by email at
[email protected] or mobile 086 246 464
