DUBLIN DEAF ASSOCIATION NEW WEBSITE
We would like to send our best wishes to the Dublin Deaf Association on the
launch of their new website. The DDA hope the website will give you a sense
of the D.D.A., the role it plays within in the Deaf Community, and the
services and activities it offers to meet the needs of the Deaf Community.
You can also read about the history of the Association, and the details and
schedules of clubs that are involved with them.

The DDA and its council support and co-ordinate the social, cultural and
sporting activities of the Deaf Community in Dublin. The Centre is
officially called “St. Vincent’s Centre for the Deaf” but is better know as
“The Deaf Club”. While the DDA is based in Dublin, Deaf people from all over
Ireland visit the Centre and avail of a wide range of activities there. The
new website details are http://dublindeafassociation.com/

POETRY IN IRISH SIGN LANGUAGE
The Centre for Deaf Studies recently ran a workshop on poetry in Irish Sign
Language, facilitated by Donna Jo Napoli, Professor of Linguistics,
Swarthmore College, Pennsylvania (USA) and Rachel Sutton-Spence, Senior
Lecturer, Centre for Deaf Studies, University of Bristol. The results of the
workshop are creative, humorous and beautiful, and can been on Youtube:

For those interested in learning about sign language poetry, Rachel Sutton
Spence co-authored a book “Analysing Sign Language Poetry”. This is the
first book to focus entirely on the analysis of sign language poetry. Richly
illustrated with images taken from poetry performances, the book draws
mainly on the work of Dorothy Miles in both British and American Sign
languages, but the analytical tools developed are also used in examining
recent work by Paul Scott and other sign language poets, exploring the
elements of text and performance that can inform and challenge our
understanding of poetry more generally. Topics covered include the use of
repetition and symmetry, the importance of visual neologisms for aesthetic
effect and the creation of metaphor and ambiguity.

With an afterword by Paddy Ladd, the critical analysis of the poetry is set
within the framework of an appreciation of Deaf culture and Deaf
communities.
