Kerry Deaf Resource Centre Update 09.11.15
THANK YOU TO CHURCH COLLECTION VOLUNTEERS
We would like to extend a huge thank you to volunteers & parishioners of Brosna & Knocknagoshel for supporting our Church Collection over the weekend. The income from these collections enables us to cover the overhead costs of running our Centre in Tralee. We are very grateful to all those who supported the collection.
SUPPORTER OF THE YEAR NOMINATIONS
It’s that time of year again where we are looking for nominations for our
Deaf and Hearing Supporter of the Year Awards. Do you know of a person,
organisation or a service that has been supportive of Deaf issues in the
past year. Has someone contributed to improving the lives of Deaf people in
Kerry? Has access improved in a particular service?
If so, send us their names and we will consider them for an award. The
successful people will be announced at our annual Christmas party (details
of party coming soon). Each winner will be presented with a framed
certificate, a box of chocolates and a bottle of wine. Get your nominations
in now.

We have been asked to inform you that Cork City Christmas Lights will be

favourite Christmas songs. Any queries text Ray Greene on 086 3970452 or

ETHIOPIA DEAF PROJECT SCHOOL EXTENSION OPENED
As many of you know the Ethiopia Deaf Project (EDP) is an Irish based
Charity that established & supports a Deaf school in Ambo Ethiopia. This
month the school celebrated another huge milestone when they officially
opened a new extension to the school. This new development will enable the
school to enrol younger deaf children in the Grade1- Grade 4 classes.
EDP committee members from Ireland along with supporters from the Children’s
Charity Shop Clonakilty flew out to Ethiopia for the official opening. While
they were there, they also organised & participated in the inaugural 10km
Ambo Fun Run which also raised awareness of the school. We would like to
extend our best wishes to the EDP project on this fantastic achievement. We
look forward to seeing the extension on our next trip there.
For more information on EDP, go to

ETHIOPIA DEAF PROJECT 2016 CALENDAR ON SALE SHORTLY
EDP organises a number of fundraising activities during the year, which our
Centre always support. The project is in the process of compiling a 2016
Calendar, which will go on sale shortly.
Our Centre has agreed to fund a page again in the 2016 calendar. If you
would like to purchase a calendar from us, please contact us and we will put
one aside for you when they arrive. Last years calendar was 3euro plus
postage & we would imagine the costs would be similar for the 2016 edition.
REMARKABLE DOCUMENTARY ON DEAF PEOPLE IN HAITI.
While we are on the subject of Deaf people abroad, do you ever wonder what
happens to Deaf people when there are in natural disasters such as
earthquakes or tsunamis and when there are outbreaks of war? A remarkable
documentary can be seen on BSL Zone that shows how Deaf people rebuilt their
lives following the earthquake in Haiti.
The earthquake in January 2010 killed at least 230,000 people and left over
300,000 injured. Many thousands of people were left homeless. In the chaos
that followed, the Deaf community found itself more isolated than ever, but
thanks to an organisation International Deaf Emergency, founded by Emmanuel
Jacq, they have been able to begin the task of rebuilding their lives.
In the documentary Haiti: Source of Hope, which was made for the French TV
series L’oeil et la main, director Sandrine Herman set about finding out how
Deaf lives had changed, and how they were being put back together. The
documentary has English subtitles and can be viewed at

BSL ZONE
While you are checking out the documentary on Deaf people in Haiti, have a
look around the BSL Zone website. While the majority of the programmes
online are in BSL (British Sign Language), many of the programmes are
subtitled in English also.
The site has an extensive lists of programmes including: Real Life, Drama,
Chat Shows, Zoom Short Films, Web Exclusives, Comedy, Deaf World, Children,
Punk Chef, Deaf History, Wicked, The Hub, Sports and Behind the Scenes. To
