SURVEY FOR PARENTS OF DEAF CHILDREN
Irish Deaf Kids (IDK) featured a survey in a recent newsletter for parents
of deaf children. The survey is open to families in Ireland who use sign
language only, spoken language only, or a mix of both, with their deaf
children. The survey is being organised by Anne Marie Gorman, a Masters
student at Trinity College Dublin.

CHURCH INTERPRETING TRAINING.
Are you interested in religious interpreting & sign language for religious
settings? If so, a course will be running for Deaf people, Irish sign
language (ISL) users and ISL interpreters on Monday, 23rd & Tuesday 24th
June from 10am–4.30pm. Frankie Berry will be the course trainer and will
cover such topics as knowledge, understanding, translating Prayers,
Scripture and Religious Signs.
The course will be held in the CSL Studies Training Centre, Tuam Road Retail
Centre, Tuam Road, Galway City. Light refreshments are included in the
cost, which is 120euro. There are only 14 places so book early by emailing

FOUR SCHOOLS ONE LANGUAGE – CLIP IN IRISH SIGN LANGUAGE
A clip of students from four different post primary schools signing Avicii’s
song “Wake me up” in Irish Sign Language is gaining popularity on Youtube.

GOOGLE GLASS ADAPTATION OPENS THE UNIVERSE TO DEAF
A group of Deaf university students have helped to develop a system to
provide American Sign Language (ASL) narration to planetarium shows using
Google Glass. The ‘Signglasses’ project, which was developed by Professor
Mike Jones along with his students at Brigham Young University (BYU) in the
USA, projects the sign language narration onto several types of glasses –
including Google Glass.
The BYU team tests the system during field trip visits by post primary
students at Jean Messieu School for the Deaf. Interestingly, the
researchers assumed that the wearer would prefer to have the video displayed
at the top of the glass, like the way Google Glass normally displays it, but
viewers preferred the signer being displayed in the centre of one lens.
They also found that deaf participants preferred to look straight through
the signer when they returned their focus to the planetarium show.
The potential for this technology goes beyond planetarium shows. The team
is also working with researchers at Georgia Tech to explore signglasses as a
literacy tool. Let’s hope Ireland will benefit from this research in time
to come.

TEENAGER LEFT DEAF BY MENINGITIS RECEIVES 5MILLION EURO
The Independent newspaper recently reported that an 18-year-old Co. Wicklow
woman has received a settlement, without admission of liability, against two
GPs for 5 million euro. The court was told that if she had been admitted to
hospital when she became ill at 13 months old, it was expected she would not
have developed meningitis. According to the article, it was claimed there
was an “alleged failure to ensure proper care and continuity of care and a
failure to attend her in good time”. The result being that she lost her
hearing.
This court case has highlighted the seriousness of contracting meningitis
and its potential side effects. The public has also been reminded of the
importance of being aware of and alert to the signs and symptoms of
meningitis in order to help prevent this happening in our own families.
