DEAF  VICTIMS  OF  CRIME  IN  IRELAND  RESEARCH  CONFERENCE
A huge thanks to Gill Harold and University College Cork (UCC) for inviting
our Manager, Willie White, to their “Deaf Victims of Crime in Ireland- UCC
Roundtable Research Conference”.

This was a very informative event with representatives from Deaf
organisations such as the IDS, CDA, DCC, as well as Garda, Women’s Aid,
legal and academic bodies including UCC and The Centre for Deaf Studies,
Trinity College.

Dr. Gill Harold is doing research on this very important topic and would
still like to hear from anyone in the Deaf community who has been a victim
of crime.  If you have, for example, experienced having your bag/wallet
stolen, house broken into, car broken into or stolen, beaten up, bullying,
physical/mental abuse etc.

Also, what was your experience of emergency services?
Garda?
Hospital?
Interpreting access?
Victim support?

DEAFORWARD  FUNDING  UPDATE
Elaine Grehan, from the Irish Deaf Society, has updated a video on Facebook
concerning an update on Deaforward’s funding.  Last year they, and 23 other
organisations, had their funding withdrawn.  However, after much lobbying
the government, they received a once off “bridging fund” which was due to
expire on 30th June 2015.

Since then, they have been lobbying the government with regard to continuing
the funding.  They have now received a formal announcement that they are to
receive a formal extension by another “bridging fund” from the 1st July 2015
to June 2016.  The total amount received, 1.32 million euro, will be divided
between 30 organisations.

This “bridge funding” applies only to those who were unsuccessful in the
last Scheme to Support National Organisations (SSNO) round of funding last
summer and all applicants of SSNO funding will have to apply for funding in
2016.  This means Deaforward will have to apply all over again, and as a
result, they are unable to guarantee their service continuing from June
2016.

AMBO  RAMBLE  CYCLE  –  CALL  TO  ALL  CYCLISTS!
We would like to remind all cyclists out there of this year’s Ambo Ramble
which will be held on Sunday the 28th June in Ballinhassig in Co. Cork.
With two routes of 130k and 40k to choose from you can be either a real
serious contender or just out for the camaraderie.  The smaller field of
cyclists also allows you to get used to the formal and informal side of
riding within groups in preparation for the Ring of Kerry cycle.  All monies
raised from this year’s and previous events has been of huge benefit to the
Ethiopian Deaf Project’ which is building a school for deaf children in
Ethiopia.

The organisers are also calling for bakers and volunteers to help out on the
day.  See their Facebook page for details.

Entry €30 & you can register at the following: www.iregister.ie/amboramble/
