Kerry Deaf Resource Centre Update 08.04.13
STUDENTS ON PLACEMENT WITH OUR SERVICE.
Last week, our service hosted the final two students from the Centre for
Deaf Studies in Trinity College. Both students are in the 4th year Sign
Language Interpreting programme and spent the week on placement with our
service.
Frances Langan took a career break as a Staff Officer from the Department of
Justice and Equality in 2009 to undertake the Bachelor Degree in Deaf
Studies.
As part of her placement, she hoped to achieve a number of learning outcomes
and some valuable experience. She was keen to make sure it was a rewarding
experience for both parities concerned. She hoped to improve her all round
knowledge of the Deaf community and, in particular her ISL productive,
receptive and interpreting skills. In the past, Frances had been involved
in the Dublin Deaf Drama Group and the IDS Fusion Workshop for the St
Patrick’s Day Parade in 2012. She also attended many other Deaf community
social and group events in her capacity as observer whilst on placement in
3rd year.
Maurice Newman worked as a journalist for approx 20 year. He is well versed
in the arts of proofreading, writing, sub-editing, and page layout.
Over the past few years, he has been involved, on a voluntary basis, with
‘Share the Journey’ working with deaf youngsters from toddlers to teenagers.
In addition, he has been active in the Dublin Theatre of the Deaf.
We would like to thank our staff and clients for warmly welcoming all the 9
students from CDS. We appreciate the time and effort that was spent on the
students and hope their learning contributes positively in their future
careers.
ISL EVERYWHERE APP.
In a recent update, we included an item on a new sign language app that will
be launched shortly. The app developers have launched a beta test version
with approx 50 signs, the alphabet and numbers 1-10. They would appreciate
if people could view the app and provide feedback and suggestions.
They will try to incorporate as many of these suggestions as possible in the
final build. The final version will hold approx 1,000 signs and phrases,
fairy tales and language learning by the end of April. The smart phone app
version will follow in May.

CENTRE FOR DEAF STUDIES (CDS) ALUMNI BALL.
A group of this year’s 4th year students (the first 4th year cohort to
graduate from CDS) have formed an alumni group with a view to establishing a
social and professional network that caters to all students of CDS – past,
present, and future – and foster the establishment of useful links between
them for many years to come. This year’s prestigious inaugural event will
include a pre-dinner drinks reception, three-course dinner with wine and/or
soft drinks, some excellent guest speakers, an awards ceremony, and a free
raffle with prizes. There will also be a post-Ball networking session in a
nearby hotel where, drinking, dancing, finger food, and ‘networking’ will be
encouraged. Tickets for the evening’s entertainment are priced at €60 per
person.
It is hoped the Alumni Ball becoming an annual event. Everyone who has
graduated over the past 11 years is invited to attend, as will all future
graduates. Other invitees include staff from CDS, members of TCD School of
Linguistic, Speech and Communications Sciences, members of Irish and
international Deaf organisations and communities, and all who have an
interest in the ISL community in this country, including interpreters, sign
language teachers, and Deaf Studies professionals in all walks of life.
