THANK YOU FOR SPOT PRIZES FOR CHRISTMAS PARTY

In addition, we would like to thank our staff & volunteers for all their
hard work in securing spot prizes from our generous sponsors. Our sincere
thanks to everyone and we know our lucky winners will be delighted with
their prizes.
REMINDER OF SUPPORTER OF THE YEAR NOMINATIONS
It’s our last call for nominations for our Deaf and Hearing Supporter of the
Year Awards. We need your names this week as successful people will be
announced at our Christmas party. Each winner will be presented with a
framed certificate, a box of chocolates and a bottle of wine.
Do you know of a person, organisation or a service that has been supportive
of Deaf issues in the past year. Has someone contributed to improving the
lives of Deaf people in Kerry or indeed nationally/internationally? Has
access improved in a particular service? If so, get your nominations in this
week by email, text or fax.
2016 CALENDARS NOW ON SALE
We have just received a box of 2016 calendars with all money going directly
to the Ethiopia Deaf Project (EDP). Calendars costs 3euro each (plus
postage). The EDP committee can assure you that every euro goes directly to
the Ambo Lazarist Deaf School (ALDS) in Ambo, Ethiopia.
This is a project that our Centre has also supported since it was 1st
established. Our Manager has visited Ambo Ethiopia twice over the past few
years and has seen the how the school has gone from a dream to a reality.
The school now takes in students from Grade 1 to Grade 8. It also employs
two Deaf tutors with all teaching done through Ethiopian Sign Language.
For more information on the project, which was originally envisioned by Fr.
Stephen Monaghan who is also well known in the Irish Deaf Community, go to

ETHIOPIA DEAF PROJECT LOOKING FOR SPONSORS
The EDP committee are now looking for sponsors to make a monthly donation to
sponsor deaf children’s education in Ambo, Ethiopia. It will cost 21euro per
month or 250euro per year. Donations can be set up by monthly direct debit
with your bank.
Most of the children attending ALDS come from very poor circumstances. Yet
they manage to turn up at the school each morning with huge smiles on their
faces. They are delighted with the opportunity to be able to learn in a
school that fully understands their needs, celebrates their abilities and
challenges them each and every day to achieve their full potential. To see a
clip of deaf students in the school being taught by a Deaf teacher, click on
the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?
Your sponsorship will ensure that a student receives the best possible
opportunity in both education and in life. Maybe this Christmas, you, your
family, a club/group would consider sponsoring a student? For more
information, contact the EDP committee via their Facebook page- details of
which are above.
DEAF MODEL WINS AMERICA’s NEXT TOP MODEL
While we are on the subject of international news, we would like to extend
our congratulations to Nyle Di Marco, a Deaf model who won this year’s
America’s Next Top Model (ANTM)
Nyle comes from a Deaf family with his parents, both of his brothers and his
grandparents all born Deaf. He is a strong & proud Deaf sign language user
and has worked tirelessly to create awareness of the richness of American
Sign Language (ASL) and the Deaf community & Deaf Culture.
ANTM is broadcast on American TV and internationally. This is a brilliant
win for him, his Deaf family and the Deaf community worldwide. It is also
another example of how Deaf people can compete at a national and
international level.
