Kerry Deaf Resource Centre Update 07.09.15

Over the past couple of months we have been outlining the services available
via our Centre. As our service is part funded by the HSE, supports are
provided in conjunction with in-house staff, freelance professionals and/or
external services providers. Here is a sample of the professionals we work
closely with.

SUPPORT  PROVIDED  IN-HOUSE  BY  OUR   SERVICE
William White (Manager) Willie grew up with Deaf parents and is known as a
CODA (Children of Deaf Adults) in the Deaf community.  He graduated from
Bristol University/ Trinity College in 1994 where he studied Deaf Studies &
Sign Language Interpreting.  Since then he has worked continuously in the
Deaf community and has now over 21 years of experience in this sector.

Geraldine Broderick (ISL Co-ordinator) Geraldine is Deaf and is our Irish
Sign Language (ISL) Co-ordinator.  Geraldine organises Home Tuition in ISL
for families with a deaf child. In addition, she provides ISL tuition to
staff members and to families who are outside the scope of the Home Tuition
scheme.  She also responds to queries from customers on sign language
classes & ISL materials.

Therese Gallant (Elderly Outreach Worker) Therese is our elderly Outreach
Officer and works on Mondays and Tuesdays.  She visits elderly people with
hearing loss in Nursing Homes, Community Centres and Active Retirement
Groups.  Therese also co-ordinates our Street & Church Collections.

Noreen Cronin (Admin/Reception/Accounts/PA) Noreen works Mondays and
Tuesdays. She works with clients with general and Deaf/hard of hearing
related issues. Her other duties include reception duties, admin, accounts,
and PA to our Manager.

Sandra Kearney (Admin/Reception) Sandra is hard of hearing and works in our
Centre on Wednesday & Thursday. Sandra covers admin & reception. She also
works with Deaf and hard of hearing (hoh) clients with their general and
Deaf/hard of hearing related issues.

CE  POSITION  SPONSORED  BY  NEKD
Frances Woodley – Frances assists Deaf and hard of hearing (hoh) clients
with their general and Deaf/hoh related queries. She also provides PA
support to our Manager. Frances works Wednesdays, Thursdays and half day
Fridays.  Unfortunately, due to CE eligibility criteria, Frances will finish
up at the end of October 2015.

SUPPORTS  AVAILABLE  FROM  FREELANCERS  &  EXTERNAL  SERVICES
Veronica White (Freelance Sign Language Interpreter) Veronica is a graduate
of UCC & Bristol University Deaf Studies/Sign Language Interpreting.  She
can be booked for freelance sign language interpreting work via our Centre
or a number of Sign Language Interpreting booking/referral agencies.
Veronica is also actively involved in Sign Language Interpreters Munster &
CODA activities

Catherine White (Freelance Sign Language Interpreter) This month Catherine
relocated back to Co. Kerry. She is now available on a freelance basis for
sign language interpreting assignments.  She can be booked via our Centre or
a number of Sign Language Interpreting booking/referral agencies.  She is
also qualified in British Sign Language & New Zealand Sign Language.  She
has extensive managerial & training experience and was the Co-ordinator of
our successful EEI (Education Equality Initiative) a number of years ago.
Catherine is also a CODA and has a wealth of experience in CODA related
work.

Christina O’Donoghue (DALS Tutor) Christina is Deaf and a graduate of
Gallaudet University in the United States.  She provides English & Computer
Literacy classes here on Tuesdays (11am–4pm) and Thursday mornings
(11am–1pm). These classes are funded by DALS, the Deaf Adult Literacy
Service.  On Thursday afternoons, Christina also voluntarily facilitates a
Deaf social get-together and arts & crafts classes in our Centre.

Patrick Doody (Home Tuition in ISL Tutor) Patrick is Deaf and works closely
with Geraldine on the Home Tuition in ISL classes.  Patrick is a former CE
staff member here and now provides tuition in sign language to families of
deaf children. The Dept of Education provides funding to parents to avail of
these classes.

Aileen Curtayne (Deafhear Social Worker) If clients and/or their families
require Social Work support we make referrals to Aileen Curtayne who is a
Social Worker with Deafhear in Killarney.

John Patrick Doherty (Lay Chaplain NCDP). John Patrick is Deaf and provides
Lay Chaplaincy support via the National Chaplaincy for Deaf People. John
Patrick provides access to religious settings such as Christenings, 1st Holy
Communions, Confirmations, Weddings & Funerals. He is also available for
hospital & home visits.

Una O’Neill (Visiting Teacher of the Deaf). If families have a child that is
diagnosed as being deaf, we make referrals to the Dept of Education’s
Visiting Teacher service. Una then works with the families & relevant
educational providers.
