HOUSE OF LORDS DEBATE – HOW NHS IS FAILING DEAF PEOPLE
Following the ‘Sick of It’ report, by the Deaf health charity SignHealth, a
debate was held on 25 March in the House of Lords in England to debate
measures to be taken to improve the health of Deaf people. According to the
report, Deaf people have much higher rates of undiagnosed illness than
hearing people do, and that even when a condition has been diagnosed it is
likely to be poorly treated. The reasons are a failure to supply sign
language interpreters for consultations, difficulty getting an appointment
in the ?rst place, and a lack of accessible health information.

This issue is not isolated to the UK but is also occurring here in Ireland.
Hopefully, this debate might help to highlight the issue and bring it to the
attention of our politicians in Ireland.

were Finnish President Tarja Halonen, Minister of Foreign Affairs Alexandre
Stubb, MP Pekka Haavisto and MP Jani Toivola.

Signmark has been an advocate for disability rights for many years. He uses
his music to highlight the history, culture and rights of the Finnish Deaf
