MONTHLY MASS FOR DEAF COMMUNITY.
Our monthly mass will be held this Sunday 13th of February at 3pm in St.
John’s Pastoral Centre in Tralee. As usual, Veronica White of the National
Chaplaincy will interpret the mass.

Tea and coffee will be served afterwards. If you require accessible
transport to this event, please contact us.

BAG PACKING FOR ETHIOPIA DEAF PROJECT
As many of you know, a group of Irish Deaf people, two hearing siblings from
a Deaf family and Fr. Stephen Monaghan flew out to Ethiopia in 2010. This
was part of a Deaf project that hopes to build a Deaf Centre in Ambo. Land
is currently being secured for the project. Once compensation has been
agreed and paid for, an application will be submitted for overseas aid. If
successful, plans to build a Centre will be lodged with the local Council in
Ethiopia.

To raise extra funds for the project, a number of bag packing dates have
been organised in Tesco’s in Douglas Shopping Centre Cork.

Volunteers are needed on the 10th and 11th of February from 11am to 9pm.
Also on the 12th of February from 11am to 6pm.

If you are available, please let us know and we will contact the organisers
on your behalf.

UPCOMING NATIONAL ELECTIONS
As many of you know, Ireland will go to the Polls to vote in a new
Government on the 25th of February. Do you know if you are registered to
vote? If not go to www.checktheregister.ie and see if your details are there
and up to date.

If you are not registered, you can fill in a RFA2 form and give it to your
local County Council.

In addition, if you have moved and your details are not correct, you can
fill in a RFA3 form. These must be filled in and returned 14 days before the
election.

John Bosco Conama presents more information on this in sign language at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kzsx3ocIeq8

An open meeting on the General Election will be held on the 15th of February
at 7.45pm in the Deaf Centre in Drumcondra.

The Irish Deaf Society has also drawn up an information fact sheet that you
can present to candidates who may do “door to door” campaigning. To get a
copy of this, contact the IDS.

CENSUS 2011 QUESTION ON IRISH SIGN LANGUAGE
After many years of campaigning by the Deaf community in Ireland- the
upcoming Census on the 10th of April has a question on sign language usage
in Ireland.

This is a huge development in Ireland and a major achievement by those who
campaigned for this to be included in the Census.

In the Census form on page 15 it will say “Do you speak a language other
than English or Irish at home? What is the language?” Underneath, write down
in full IRISH SIGN LANGUAGE.

This will enable the Government to see how many sign language users there
are in Ireland? Make sure to fill this section in whether to live alone or
in shared accommodation.

For more information on this, go to
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j00jzgYPX2Q and see John Bosco Conama giving
clear instructions on how this section can be filled in by sign language
users in Ireland.
