On behalf of our Board and staff, we would like to wish all our clients,
service users and supporters a very Happy New Year. We hope you had an
enjoyable Christmas.

A special word of thanks to everyone who sent us Christmas cards and dropped
gifts into our office before Christmas- we really appreciate your kindness
and best wishes.

We look forward to working with you all again in 2013.

IRELAND/ETHIOPIA DEAF PROJECT- SCHOOL OFFICIALLY OPENED.
It is only two years since a group of Deaf and hearing people from Ireland,
including our own Veronica White and Willie White flew to Ethiopia to
support local Deaf people there in their campaign to set up a Deaf school.

We are thrilled to announce the school was officially opened on the 30th of
December in Ambo. Stephen Monaghan attended the official opening on behalf
of those who supported the project in Ireland.

Phase 2 of the project can now begin. Land opposite the school with 5
buildings was purchased in late 2012 and it is hoped that a Deaf Centre and
a vocational skills training centre will be developed there.

We would like to thank everyone for their support to date. Photos of the
school will be available in due course and will be available at
www.facebook.com/ethiopiadeafprojectambo

If you would like to support this project, don’t forget we have 2013
Ethiopian Deaf Calendars on sale in our office. Cost 5 euro each with all
proceeds going directly to the project.

MEDISIGNS/EFLSI CONFERENCE- INTERPRETING IN HEALTHCARE.
This conference will be held on the 1st and 2nd of March in Dublin. The
seminar will present findings from a recent European Commission funded
project, MEDISIGNS, and outlines some key training materials and resources
available to support the training of interpreters (as well as healthcare
professionals and members of the Deaf community) for work in healthcare.

The target audience for this conference is interpreter trainers as well as
interpreting students, interpreters working in healthcare, healthcare
professionals and members of the Deaf community.

The conference speakers are internationally renowned experts from the fields
of interpreter training, Deaf studies, healthcare and legal medicine and
this is an event not to be missed and the first of its kind in Ireland.

One paper of interest to the Irish Deaf community will be provided by Ms.
Caoimhe Gleeson from the Health Service Executive in Ireland. Her paper will
be “Providing Access to Public Service Healthcare for Deaf Patients:
Challenges & Milestones”

The conference is promoted by Interesource Group (Ireland) Limited and
hosted by the Centre for Deaf Studies, the MEDISIGNS project, partnered with
EFSLI.
