RTÉ UPDATE
Hands On: At the moment, RTÉ are undecided if Hands On will be coming back
on air or if a new Deaf TV programme will be introduced in time for Autumn
2015. RTÉ are also looking into which programmes would be suitable for Deaf
viewers. Two new documentaries are due to be shown by May 2015.
The Irish Deaf Society (IDS) handed a petition with 664 signatures to Colm
O’Callaghan, Head of RTÉ Production. This petition highlighted how
disappointed the Deaf community were when they not consulted on this
decision to axe Hands On. The IDS also highlighted their concerns that the
proposed documentaries are made without Deaf input.
ISL programming: At present, RTÉ are airing an average 3.5 hours of ISL late
every Wednesday night (not including RTÉ news/Weather). The IDS informed
RTÉ that whilst they appreciate the increase in ISL, they would like to see
more prime time ISL viewing. RTÉ announced that “Storytime” for children
will be ISL translated and be shown in the morning at 7.30 am.
RTÉ DVDs: All RTÉ DVDs in future will have subtitles.
RTÉ News for the Deaf: Two new presenters have been hired. So watch out to
see who they are!

FLASHING LIGHT APP FOR SMART PHONES
A new smart phone app from Convo, a Deaf-owned and operated company allows
users to create personalised ring tones of light to identify incoming
callers, and adjust the brightness in a room to make sign language easier to
see onscreen. The app works with Phillips Hue Wifi enabled light bulbs,
which can be made to change colour or turn off & on via a smart phone app.
