Kerry Deaf Resource Centre Update 04.04.16

IMPROVEMENTS TO COMPUTER/INTERNET SERVICE

As you may know, our Centre has computer & internet services in our upstairs room which are available to Deaf & hard of hearing clients and their family members.

We have now upgraded all these computers with 2016 Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, and PowerPoint. These programmes are installed on the computers we purchased before Christmas. If you would like to use this service, it is available Mon-Thurs 10am-1pm & 2-5pm and Fri 10am-1pm.

Our thanks to ENCLUDEit.ie for donating the 2016 software at a reduced cost.  We know that the up-to-date software will be of great benefit to everyone who uses our service.

HEARING AID BATTERIES WORK BETTER IF EXPOSED TO AIR

Our thanks to Cork Deaf Association (CDA) for posting this interesting article on their Facebook page recently at https://www.facebook.com/corkdeaf/?fref=nf

Did you know hearing aid batteries can last up to 85 percent longer when left exposed to oxygen (air) before being inserted into the hearing aid itself?

This discovery was made by a 14-year-old student when he was asked to do a project for school. He discovered that zinc hearing aid batteries, which come with a tab or sticker attached to the back of them, last longer when they are exposed to air after removing the tab.

For more information on this remarkable student, you can check out

INTERNATIONAL DEAF NEWS

Many of you might be aware of Nyle DiMarco who was the winner of America’s Next Top Model’s final season. Nyle is third generation Deaf & a proud sign language user. He also holds a degree in mathematics.

Nyle is now competing in Dancing with the Stars USA. This is another example of where Deaf sign language users can excel in and compete to the highest levels. Nyle and his dance partner Peta Murgatroyd have come up with a system of eye contact and touching signals that help him keep up with the beat. We definitely think that Nyle has a strong chance to win this competition too.
