CDS STUDENT ON PLACEMENT WITH OUR SERVICE.
We would like to welcome Annik Dennehy who is on placement with our service
this week. Annik is a 3rd year student on the Centre for Deaf Studies sign
language interpreting programme in Trinity College.
Annik first came across sign language while volunteering in Belarus with
Chernobyl children and her interest grew from there. She worked with The
Cork Deaf Association on placement earlier this year and has started
attending IDYA events in recent months. A lecture given in CDS last November
on Deaf-Blind interpreting sparked an interest with her, which she hopes to
pursue in the future.
If you would like to meet with Annik and learn more about the CDS, she will
be here until Friday.
PLAY IN CORK FOR DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING
The Half Moon Theatre in Cork along with a number of other theatres will be
hosting a play that will be of great interest to Deaf and hard of hearing
audiences. This is part of a national tour of the play “FOLLOW”. It is being
presented in partnership between Arts & Disability Ireland and WillFredd
Theatre.
FOLLOW began its life when Shane O’Reilly, a young Irish ISL (Irish Sign
Language) proficient actor and a CODA (Child of Deaf Adults), joined
WillFredd’s team. This raised the question of whether it was possible to
create a truly integrated piece of theatre, which is fully accessible to
both a Deaf and hearing audience at the same time? WillFredd Theatre took
the challenge on the chin and went into the Dublin Deaf Community to meet
with people and to hear their stories and experiences of growing up as part
of the Deaf community in a hearing world.
According to its website, FOLLOW is the first piece of theatre in Ireland
created for both a Deaf and hearing audience and is inspired by sign
language as a form of communication and narrative device. It will be staged
in Cork from the 4th – 9th March. For more information and dates in other
locations, go to

VOLUNTEER IN ETHIOPIA IMHO AUGUST 2013
As a result of our own work in Ethiopia- we have developed links with the
IMHO- the International Medical Health Organisation who are also involved in
a range of project in Ethiopia.
The IMHO will be organising a volunteer trip to work with the Deaf community
in Addis Ababa, Bahir Dar and Awash in Ethiopia from the 11th-24th of
August.
Over the past few years a team of committed volunteers have been working in
partnership with dedicated local leaders in Ethiopia in developing
educational programs for deserving but highly disadvantaged Deaf youth, as
well as strategising for how best to engage with and support Deaf
organizations, students, and professionals. For the second year in a row, a
volunteer service trip is being organized to Ethiopia, in which
international volunteers will interact with local Deaf persons, conduct
educational service programs for deaf children, visit with local
organisations at the forefront of developing services for the benefit of the
Deaf community, and explore this truly magnificent country! This
13-day/12-night trip is being sponsored by the International Medical Health
Organization (IMHO).
It cost 1700 (US dollars) per person and this is all-inclusive from time of
arrival until departure. Volunteers will also have to pay their own airfare
and visa fees.
If you are interested in applying or would like more information, you can
