Kerry Deaf Resource Centre Update 03.12.12

NEW VISITING TEACHER OF THE DEAF.
We would like to extend a warm welcome to the new Visiting Teacher of the
Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Una O’Neill. We’ve had the pleasure of working
with Una in her previous role as Visiting Teacher for Travellers. Una has a
great wealth of experience, which she will be eager to share this with
parents and children. In addition, she is very keen to continue the positive
and strong working relationship with our service.

As with all new roles, Una will be quite busy getting to grips with her new
role. However, she is very keen to meet with parents and children. If you
would like to contact her, her email address is [email protected]
and her mobile is 087 2228 957.

THANK YOU TO DAVE O SULLIVAN.
We would like to wish Dave O’Sullivan a very happy and well deserved early
retirement from his role as Visiting Teacher. Dave worked for many many
years supporting hearing parents with deaf and hard of hearing children.

He will be sorely missed by parents throughout Co. Kerry. We would like to
thank him for his hard work over the years and wish him every success in his
future professional and personal life.

SPORTS ACTIVITIES WITH TRALEE INST. OF TECHNOLOGY (ITT).
We’ve had a busy few months of activities with the Health and Leisure Dept
in the ITT. Last week, we had gym sessions in the North Campus and
Orienteering in Ballyseedy Woods outside Tralee.

We will have further gym sessions on Tuesdays between now and Christmas
break. Our last outdoor sporting activity will be Indoor Rock Climbing in
Play at Heights in Dingle. If you would like to join any of these
activities, please send us your details. Our sincere thanks to Ursula,
Tomas, Trevor and all the students for their hard work and support. It’s
been a very energetic and fun time for all of us.

KICKSTART- TEACHING FOOTBALL SKILLS.
Deaf Sports Ireland (DSI) & FAI are organising Kickstart 1 for men & women
(individuals, parents, volunteers, teachers etc.) on Saturday 8th December
at Deaf Village Ireland in Dublin. This course is for teaching football
skills.

This is a great opportunity for anyone to increase their confidence and
teach simple football for all ages. A sign language interpreter will be
provided.

If you would like to enrol on the course, please send your details ASAP by
text to 087 1349877 or email [email protected]. There are limited
places available.

REMINDER OF ‘SUPPORTER OF THE YEAR’ AWARDS.
It’s that time of year again where we are looking for nominations for our
Deaf and hearing Supporter of the Year Awards.

Do you know of a person, organisation or a service that has been supportive
of Deaf issues in the past year. Has someone contributed to improving the
lives of Deaf people in Kerry? Has access improved in a particular service?

If so, send us their names and we will consider them for an award. The
successful people will be announced at our Christmas party and will be
presented with a framed certificate, a box of chocolates and a bottle of
wine. Get your nominations in now.

CLOSING FOR CHRISTMAS & NEW YEAR HOLIDAYS.
We will be closing for annual leave on Friday, the 21st of December at 1pm.
We will re-open on Monday, the 7th of January.

If you require a sign language interpreter during the holiday period for a
legal or medical emergency, you can contact the Sign Language Interpreting
Service (SLIS) on their 24hr Emergency Helpline: 087 6725179.

SLIS will do its best to facilitate your interpreting requirements. However,
due to the limited number of interpreters on call, it may not be possible to
guarantee an interpreter.
