TRANSCRIPTS OF ISL RECOGNITION BILL DEBATE
In our last update, we mentioned about the Irish Sign Language Recognition
campaign’s second debate in the Seanad (House of Senators). Unfortunately,
the Bill was not passed into law. However, if you would like to see the

On page 38 of the transcripts of the debates, Senator Marie Moloney from Co.
Kerry mentioned our own Willie White in her speech “I presume that most or
our guests know Mr. Willie White, who did a great deal of interpreting for
former President Mary McAleese. I know him well and worked with him in
Kerry promoting ISL”. Our thanks to Senator Moloney for supporting the
campaign and for acknowledging the work of our Manager, Willie White.
SLIGO COUNCIL PASSES ISL MOTION.
In the absence of official recognition, County & Town Councils throughout
Ireland continue to pass motions calling on the Irish Government to give
official recognition to Irish Sign Language. The latest Council to do so is
Sligo County Council. It is now the 32nd local authority to do so. The
motion was delayed from last year as Sligo County Council had to deal with
urgent issues surrounding the Lissadell House saga. Congrats to Sligo County
Council and to those who presented the motion on behalf of the Deaf
community.
MID-TERM CAMP FOR DEAF & HARD OF HEARING CHILDREN
The Mid-Term Camp 2014 is an exciting camp for deaf and hard of hearing
children that will take place from the 20 – 22 February 2014. The camp is
for boys and girls, aged between 10 and 15 years.
The camp will be hosted in Deaf Village Ireland (DVI) and in the residence
of St. Mary’s school for Deaf girls, Dublin. The cost is 50euro per child,
which covers accommodation, food and planned activities. This is an ideal
opportunity for deaf and hard of hearing children from around the country to
meet their peers, make new friends, enjoy the state-of-the-art sports
facilities in DVI and see first hand the Deaf schools. Parents will have a
chance to meet and talk with staff at pick-up time on the Saturday when tea
and coffee will be provided.

DEAF BLIND TRAINING
Five training days are being offered for professionals working with
individuals who are deafblind. The Professional Certificate in
Deafblindness/Mult-Sensory Impairment is designed to improve skills and
insights necessary to identify and meet needs relating to multi-sensory
impairment.
This programme is targeted at health, education and social practitioners in
the field of disability. This course takes place at the University College
Campus in Cork.
COURSE DATES & SUMMARY:
7 March: Overview on Deaf/Blindness. 9 May: Access to Learning.
20 June: Communication Strategies. 20 September: Mobility and Orientation.
15 November: Functional Assessment
An Irish Sign Language will be organised by Deafblind Ireland (if
requested).
It will cost 50 euro per day. A fee reduction is available if you register

LEVEL 3 ISL TEACHER TRAINING (SIGNATURE)
Signature are now able to hold Teacher Training for Level 3 certificate in
Irish Sign Language (ISL3) in Ireland. Before they arrange an event they
would like to know how many Centres are interested and how many teachers
would be interested in going. The cost of this event is half price this
year costing only 80 euro per person. This event will be delivered in ISL
and is expected to run from 9.30am – 4.30pm. Tea and coffee will be provided
but participants must bring own lunch.
