SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETERS REQUIRED FOR RESEARCH PROJECT
A research team made up of Prof. Lorraine Leeson (Trinity College Dublin,
Ireland), Prof. Barbara Shaffer (University of New Mexico, USA) and Prof.
Terry Janzen (University of Manitoba, Canada) are looking for sign language
interpreters to participate in their research. The theme is “I SEE what you
mean”: Visual Conceptualisation in spoken and sign language interpreters.
They are currently preparing a small international cross-linguistic study
that aims to explore how interpreters conceptualise events that they listen
to when they are preparing to interpret and/or delivering simultaneous
interpretation. They are interested in exploring the effort associated with
the task and the consequences for the interpretation process with
interpreters working into a number of languages, spoken and signed.
They are seeking two Irish Sign Language/English interpreters to work from
spoken English to ISL as part of this study. The interpreters in question
should be experienced, trained interpreters with more than five years of
experience in the field. Participation will entail preparing and interpret
two short clips and one extended interview from English into your working
language and having these interpretations video recorded. Further,
participants will be invited to review their content, stopping to
comment/reflect on the decisions they made at certain points in the process.
The process will take no more than three hours. They will pay each
participant a 100euro honorarium in recognition of their contribution.
For more information, you can email Prof. Lorraine Leeson at [email protected]
