Kerry Deaf Resource Centre Update 01.07.13
THANK YOU TO DOOKS GOLF CLUB.
We would like to extend a big thank you to Dooks Golf Club for their recent
Charities Golf event. The proceeds of the event were shared amongst 5
charities and we were delighted to be nominated as one of the recipients.
Our thanks to Dooks, the golfers who participated on the day and to all the
sponsors. We greatly appreciate your support.
THANK YOU TO RECENT STREET & CHURCH COLLECTIONS.
We would like to thank all those who collected for us during our Street
Collection in Tralee and at a Church Collection in Duagh recently. Due to
bad weather, we had to cancel a Street Collection in Listowel. We hope to
organise an alternative date due shortly. Our thanks to everyone who
supported each collection; we greatly appreciate all your support.
HSE HEARING TEST WAITING LIST UPDATE.
We have just been informed that the waiting list for hearing tests for
medical cardholders with the HSE is now approx 3 years. Applications that
were submitted in May/June 2010 are now been seen.
The staff in the Hearing Service is committed to working through the
backlog. We appreciate all the support they have provided to our clients
over the past number of years. If you are submitting an application for a
test, we would recommend you submit a letter from your GP outlining the
reasons why you require a test as this may assist the Hearing Service in
prioritising applications.
IRISH SIGN LANGUAGE SURVEY.
In the 2011 Census, Question 15 asked: Do you speak a language other than
English or Irish at home? This allowed Irish Sign Language (ISL) users to
indicate that they used ISL. The question had to answered in a particular
format, otherwise the information would not be recorded. As this was the
first time in the history of Irish Census, many people and in particular the
person filling in the questionnaire did not answer this question or answered
it incorrectly.
According to the Census 2011, 1,077 Deaf people declared they used Irish
Sign Language and 2590 used Irish Sign Language in general. The Irish Deaf
Society is now carrying out a quantitative survey nationwide to examine the
number of ISL users in Ireland. This is very important, as it will show the
actual numbers of ISL users in Ireland is higher. If you would like to
participate in the survey, please go to the following weblink

HONORARY DOCTORATE FOR LIISA KAUPPINEN.
Last week we mentioned that Liisa Kauppinen was being awarded an Honorary
Doctorate from Trinity College. This is a major achievement from Liisa
Kauppinen and for the Deaf community nationally and internationally. We’ve
had a large number of enquiries about Liisa and here are further details on
her work to date in the Deaf community.
Dr Kauppinen is Deaf and was CEO of the Finnish Association of the Deaf for
30 years, General Secretary and President of the World Federation of the
Deaf (WFD) and served as the permanent WFD representative to the United
Nations for 20 years. She still continues to serve as an expert for the
General Secretariat of the WFD. She has been a major inspiration to Deaf
communities internationally, and an articulate and intelligent ‘voice’ on
the need to explicitly state the human rights of Deaf people at national,
European and global level, all the while decrying the lack of opportunities
for education and training, the under-employment of Deaf people, and the
lack of recognition of signed languages as ‘real’ languages. She has
supported the development of Deaf self-advocacy in Ireland and was a key
supporter of the move to establish a Centre for Deaf Studies at Trinity
College in 2001/02.
