Ireland Deaf Futsal’s semi-final hopes dented by 6-1 defeat

Ireland’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the World Deaf Futsal Championships suffered a severe blow as they lost 6-1 to Turkey on Tuesday evening.

After an early spell where the sides were squarely matched, Turkey bombed into a ninth minute lead. Irish goalkeeper Robert Archer called into action on a few occasions to deny the Turkish and Eamon Byrne went close six minutes later with Ireland’s best chance of the half before they slipped further behind in 19 minutes with a Turkish goal. The half time ended with 2-0 for Turkish in favour.

Joseph Watson, Sean Young, Jason Maguire and Paul O’Callaghan were all in the thick of the action in the second half as Ireland sought a response before Young scored beautiful finished by lash the ball to the roof of the net after twenty one minutes. On form Archer kept deny Turkish’s goal before O’Callaghan hit the post in twenty seven minute but they conceded a killer third goal in a minute later.

Turkish scored fourth goal in thirty minute before Watson hit the post & Christopher Corcoran missed from the penalty spot with attempts less than three minutes apart. Ireland kept sought further goal before the Turkish killed off by scoring further two goals to bring the score to 6-1 for Turkish within 4 minute to go. The Irish battled to the end but couldn’t put the ball back of Turkish’s net!

Defeat mean Irish will have to battle for 5th – 8th place as they will take on Holland on Thursday at 12.20noon Irish time and it will be streamed live on the official tournament website, http://www.deaf-futsal2011.com
