BREAKING MUSICAL BARRIERS
In a very unique awareness-raising event, two Deafblind musicians will
perform a gig on guitar and piano on Friday, 4th March. Russ Palmer, a music
therapist and songwriter, will travel from Finland to Cork to perform with
Orla O’Sullivan, the world’s first Deafblind music teacher, pianist &
performer, in the Cornstore Bar & Restaurant (Cornmarket Street, 7 to
8.30pm).

The duo will also present a Masterclass, entitled “Two Musical Journeys – a
Deafblind Perspective”, in the Cork School of Music on Saturday, 5th March
(2 – 4pm). Both events are open to the public but the Masterclass may be of
particular interest to students of music, disability studies, music therapy
or psychology.

NEW INITIATIVE ANNOUNCED FOR VOLUNTARY SECTOR WORK PLACEMENTS
The Minister for Social Protection has announced a new work placement
programme, known as Tús. This will provide 5,000 short-term working
opportunities in community organisations for people unemployed for over a
year.

The placements will help community sector organisations by supporting the
delivery of their services. Tús, which will operate in rural and urban
areas, will be delivered using the infrastructure developed for the Rural
Social Scheme.

In specific circumstances funding will be provided from a material budget
maintained by the Local Development Company/Údarás na Gaeltachta in each
area to participating community and voluntary organisations. €30 million
will be committed in 2011 to establish Tús with an increased investment of
€100 million expected in 2012. More information is available at

SLIS MANAGER VACANCY
The National Sign Language Interpreting Service (SLIS) is seeking a Manager,
based in Dublin, who will be responsible for the development and

delivery of core strategic objectives and initiatives.

An in-depth knowledge of issues pertaining to the Deaf community as well as
to Irish Sign Language is desirable.

The successful appointee must have:
Experience in a management role and the capacity to work with and support
the SLIS Board of Management.
Ability to manage budgets and have knowledge of financial/budgetary
processes.
Excellent communication, presentation, negotiation, relationship and
team-building skills.

SLIS is the national agency for the provision of sign language interpreting
services in Ireland. SLIS is committed to the Deaf community and their needs
in terms of interpreting and related services. SLIS’s role is to promote,
represent, advocate and ensure the availability of quality interpretation
services.

SOUTH DAKOTA’s NEW GOVERNOR
We like to bring you interesting news from around the Deaf world from time
to time. In the States, South Dakota has elected a new Governor; he is the
first child of Deaf parents and was elected into his position on the 8th of
January. He knows American Sign Language and he is well known in the Deaf
