Kerry Deaf Resource Centre Update 13.05.13

JAMES O’ BRIEN RIP.
We would like to extend our sympathies to the family and friends of James
O’Brien who passed away suddenly on Friday after a short illness.

James was Deaf and a member of the travelling community. He was a past pupil
of St. Joseph’s School for Deaf Boys and was well known in the Deaf
community. He was also well known in the hearing community in Tralee where
he lived for most of his life. May he rest in peace.

Our thanks to everyone who provided support and communication support during
his illness. Our thanks also to Veronica White (NCDP) for providing
interpreting access at the removal and funeral.

SUCESSFUL INTERPRETING TRAINING WORKSHOP.
We would like to thank all the interpreters who participated in a training
workshop in our Centre on Saturday. The training was specifically for
trained and/or accredited Deaf and hearing sign language interpreters who
work in the Munster region and who are members of SLIM- Sign Language
Interpreters Munster. Interpreters came from Kerry, Limerick/Mid West, Cork,
Kilkenny and the South/Southeast of Ireland.

SHARING THE JOURNEY WORKSHOPS
As part of their Summer Project 2013, Sharing the Journey is organising a
range of workshops for deaf and hard of hearing children.

All teachers, workshop presenters and play leaders and youth leaders are
Garda vetted and have completed Child Protection and Deaf awareness
training. Activities are presented bilingually in Irish Sign Language and
spoken English.

Week 1: 1st–5th July (Ages 6–9 years). A Summer Project with a Difference!
Have fun with music, art, cookery, tag rugby, and yoga, adventure trips and
much more, while learning Irish Sign Language and becoming Deaf aware.
10.30am–3.30pm. Cost: 50euro for first child reduced rates for siblings and
friends.

Week 2: 8th–12th July (Ages 12–16 years) “Your Project. Your Choice!”
Includes base activities and outings that are selected, planned and
organised by the teenagers themselves, with the support of trained youth
leaders. Cost 40euro per person.

Week 3: 15th–18th July (Ages 6 and under) “Let’s Explore” 4 days, 2 base
days and 2 outings. Base activities include ‘Little league’; ‘Art and
Crafts; ‘Let’s Make Music’; Yoga; Drama; Storytelling; and Free Play.
Outings to The Zoo and Imaginosity are planned in consultation with parents.
We ask that under 4’s be accompanied by an adult. All parents and older
brothers and sister are welcome to join us on our days out. Cost 10euro per
child, 5euro for siblings (aged 6 and under).

Week 4: 22nd–26th July (Ages 9-12 years). Performing Arts – enjoy 4 days
high-quality workshops in Drama, Dance, Music, Performance and Yoga ending
with Our Big Day Out to Causey Farm. 10.30am–3.30pm. Cost: 50euro for first
child reduced rates for siblings and friends.

IRISH DEAF HUB- NEW DEDICATED WEBSITE ON DEAF ISSUES.
Irish Deaf Hub is a new dedicated Deaf website that will feature issues and
events of interest to the Deaf community including Sports, News, Event,
Mental Health, Insight on the Deaf Community, Jobs, History, Legal issues
etc.

The website will be regularly updated. From time to time, it will also
include special features. The current special feature is on St Joseph’s

DEAF NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD IN INTERNATIONAL SIGN.
H3.TV is a new website with information in International Sign. It broadcasts
video
programming of special events on the Internet so Deaf and hard of hearing
people around the world can view and be part of these activities.

In previous signed broadcasts, it has covered many major events worldwide
including the Deaflympics, the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD),
International Committee of Sports of the Deaf, and “Travel with Dawn” series
